Default Google toolbar page appears at Windows Update?

W98se/IE6 SP-1/ Updated to the max.
Every so often when I click on StartWindows Update, I get the Google
Toolbar Page, yet the URL remains as http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/.
This has happened perhaps 4 times in the past two years. The same has
happened on occasion with a shortcut to Google search engine too. To "fix"
the shortcut is not a problem, but how do I fix the Windows Update menu
Item? And what gives with this, anyway?

Never mind. Deleted Cookies and TIF's and it is now working properly.
Doesn't explain why this happens, but I suspect that just like any Mega
Business enterprise, there is something shifty about Google as well as
Yahoo, AOL and the like. :-\

If the Google Toolbar is installed and turned ON in the
toolbar, it will always show when Internet Explorer (it can
even be turned ON in Windows Explorer). It is normal and
not an accident or spyware.

LuckyStrike,

Right click Windows Update on the Start menu. What does it say ?
One point, spy|ad|malware has been crafted to run behind legitimate

The usual Context menu. Nothing unusual. If you mean to check properties
then it is as follows:
Shortcut
C:\WINDOWS\Start Menu
Size: 264 bytes
Target: C:\WINDOWS\WUPDMGR.EXE

No malware/ spyware detected (courtesy of Jims site, after I enabled
scripting to permit the scan). Ran CWShredder, PestPatrol, and Spybot.
Nothing found. It is now "fixed" by removing the cache and perhaps cookies.
But why does this happen? As stated, there have been occasions where my
desktop shortcut to google would only go to the Google Toolbar
(download/info) page. Had to access google by another means, create a new
shortcut, and delete the old one.

Thanks.

Thanks Jim, but I think I was misunderstood. The Windows Update start menu
item didn't go to Windows Update site, instead it opened a *page* in IE.
Namely the Google Toolbar *info and download* page. Of course the Google
toolbar appears in any instance of an open Browser window. BUT when one
clicks Windows Update, the page obtained should be Windows Update site, with
(if one has it installed) or without a Google Toolbar BHO application, and
not any other page.

Anyway, again, it has been "fixed" by deleting the TIF's and Cookies.
Thanks.

OK, I did not understand your problem. It does seem
strange, almost as though your host file had been corrupted.

There's an old zen saying that applies to Win 9x :

Yesterday it worked. Today it is not working. Windows is
like that.

Another one is: "If it's not broken it's a miracle; if it's working it's
supernatural... and it won't be working for long."

I was running a host file for a while Jim, but then after a crash several
months ago, I haven't re-installed one. I am pretty sure I don't have one at
the moment, but there are a lot of things about PC's and OS's etc., I know
little or nothing about. ;-) actually -- :-(

Thanks again.
