Yes it did shut down by itself and has only started doing
this in the past month. I have a Compaq Presario 5340.

Thanks so much.

Trying to 'enable fast shutdown as recommended in the
article as a 'work around' I do not have the 'fast
shutdown' option as instructed. Do you know if there is a
specific update I may obtain? I have windows 98SE.

Thanks,

Thanks,

I don't see any items on Jim's pages that suggest that you *enable*
the fast shutdown option. All that I can find are references to
*disabling* fast shutdown as a possible fix.

And if you do not have the fast shutdown option listed on the Advanced
options of MSCONFIG - General then that means that you already have
the "fast shutdown" update from Microsoft installed.

With Windows 98 SE you should be looking first at the various
suggestions on Jim's specific page for that version of Windows, which
you get to by clicking on the "Start Here for SE" link in the left
side column at http://aumha.org/win4/a/shutdown.htm

Good luck
