Default Product ID not working

I'm trying to email a Microsoft Professional about my
win98 explorer.exe problem and it says that I require my
Product ID.

I have my product ID number that I located under My
ComputerProperties and confirmed this against Control
PanelSystem. Its still not working.
I even checked the registry and I get the same ID. So why
isn't it being accepted?

Saying that it doesn't work is not helpful--what does it do? Is there an
error message and if so, what is it--verbatim? Was your W98 CD issued with
your computer or did you buy a retail version?

It just says invalid Product ID. "Product ID must be in
the form of 12345-XXX-987654 etc".

The OS came with my computer when I bought it from new.

System support in your case is supposed to be provided by the computer maker
so the only option I see is for you to spend $35 and call MS. Or, save your
money and reinstall the system which is what I'd do.

I have one final question. I'm looking to upgrade to
Win98SE anyway so if I can purchase this will the upgrade
solve my problem and still make my programs work?

When you upgrade a system with problems, my experience is that you then have
an upgraded system with problems. Personally, I don't do an upgrade even if
the existing system is working perfectly because I believe you get a more
stable and better working system by starting clean. To me, an upgrade is
like changing the oil in your car and not putting a clean filter in.
