Default Cross Posting

Hi:

'Cross posting', that expression came up and I would like to know,
is it exactly what it says and, if so, what is bad about it?

Harry, old and eager to know.

It's kind of like "cross-dressing".......only "bad" if you are not into it.
g

Seriously, Harry.....cross-posting is sending the same message to two or
more news groups. You saw me mention it when PA Bear added WinME to my post
in OE6......and I didn't realize he had.

Hi Heather

No comment on the "cross dressing"!!

As to the 'cross posting' - it may help if MS shows how to use OE for a News
Reader as the 1st option, instead of the CDO interface!!

Hi Heather

The CDO interface is better than it used be (Mike may have a comment or 2
about that though!!) - but is still a PITA!!

I do a lot of that - mumbling. I'm still making no comment about the other
beg

You call requiring a poster to log in using passport better? If so then I
feel we have to disagree. :-) What's needed is to keep it sweet and
simple, even intuitive, but instead I feel Microsoft have added another
layer of confusion.

The signing on has cleared a few posters out who should have been cleared
out a long time ago. It does need some more improvements still though.

For each troll that no longer posts I suspect the new interface has caused
at least ten users with problems not to post seeking help. Trolls one can
easily ignore (that's what filters are for) but it is extremely difficult
to help those who are now unable or unwilling to post seeking help with
their problems. There is absolutely no need for a passport, UseNet has
existed for years without such verification and also there is a long
standing mechanism for moderated newsgroups. All Microsoft needed to do
was to display the same information about a CDO poster as for one posting
using nntp. As it is a CDO post still has no time zone information (often
very useful) or news client information (useful where this is OE as it can
provide useful IE and system information). A poster's IP address is
simply a bonus.

I agree with you, Mike. A lot of users who do need help are confused and
some give up in the end. There must be an easier way to access the NGs via
CDO, if need be.

Heather:

Like it or not, the comparison with "cross-dressing" sheds quite a bit of
light on the situation and helps a novice like me to understand it much
better
Thanks for the enlightenment.

Harry, old and a little bit smarter..
