Default Installing WindowsME

I have a WindowsME Upgrade boxed s/w that I purchased
several years ago but never installed. I now wish to
install this over my existing Win98 on an HP computer.
In looking at the WinMe manual it says that I will
require my original full Win98 CD to install. The HP
came with their recovery disk and Win98 Manuals
(including Key) but no specific Win98 CD.

Does anyone have experience with this upgrade
installation and whether I will be able to install using
existing items?

Any cautions / other guidance appreciated as well.

Stick the ME CD in and see if you get a pop-up asking you if you want to
upgrade. If that happens then you click on yes and off you go. There is no
other way to check it out other than trying.

You should have no problems with the initial install, BUT......
You will have severe problems if for any reason you need to reformat and
reinstall ME (although you should be able to do this provided you can
reinstall your current OS onto a clean PC - check with HP about that - so
make sure that you keep a note of your current Product Key for Win 98, as
well as the one for ME)

There are a couple of upgrade versions for ME - which one do you have? - the
(special offer) one with 'Only for upgrading a Win 98 PC' printed on the
cover? - or the standard one which will upgrade Win 95, and DOS, as well as
Win 98??

No Win98 CD should be required if you intend upgrading from Win 98. A Win98
CD would however be required if you were to instead want to clean install Win
Me using the upgrade CD, the Win 98CD being required to proved your
eligibility to use an upgrade version of Win Me.

In other words, you should have no problems upgrading an existing Win 98
system using your Win Me Upgrade CD but since you have no Win 98 CD, only an
OEM recovery CD, you won't be able to clean install Win Me using the upgrade
CD.

I installed WinME over Win98SE. I had a Win95 CD ready
but the system never asked to see it. I think that the
presence of the existing op system satisfies the
requirement.

Would a Win98 OEM (or in my case a Win95 OEM) CD qualify
for a WinME upgrade?

Joe,

If the CD contains the operating system CAB files rather than a "recovery CD"
which often contains instead an image of the hard disk as first delivered,
then yes, an OEM WIn9x CD would satisfy the requirements of a qualifying
product when clean installing Win Me using an upgrade CD.

In a Win 98 or 98SE CD the operating system files are contained in a folder
named Win98. Not having a Win 95 CD to hand (I have a set of floppies), I
suspect the OS files will be in a folder labelled Win95.

Mike
My OEM Win95(b?) CD (from the late lamented Gateway UK) does indeed contain
a Win95 folder with all the cab files, etc present there.

Thanks Noel,

I've since realised that I do have a Win 95 OSR2 CD somewhere as it came with
my Dell in 1996. My floppies are the original Win 95. Whilst I "think" I
know where the floppies are (down in the garage) I haven't a clue where the
Dell OEM OSR2 CD is hiding. :-)

One of the really nice things about Gateway was that at the time, they
didn't mess with Recovery disks, etc - they gave you a pukkah MS CD, and a
set of tools to use it. - This and my Win98 upgrade disk have come in handy
many times on many PC's!
