blocking porn on the internet
There are MSN MVPs, mostly found in MSN forums, of course. You can also
change the default search pages. Plus, there's Doug Knox's lockdown techniques. www.dougknox.com -- Gary S. Terhune MS MVP Shell/User "Moonraker" wrote in message ... Is there an Mvp who would know?? i.e. who knows the most about "msn". "Gary S. Terhune" wrote in message ... Can't tell you much about it. I've never played with it. However, IE itself has some content control. Perhaps a password protected access to the internet is part of that. -- Gary S. Terhune MS MVP Shell/User "Moonraker" wrote in message ... Thanks for that, Can I set up a password to limit access to internet explorer, i.e a log on password before a search. Cheers Steve "Gary S. Terhune" wrote in message ... Might try ETrust's Internet Security Suite. It includes Parental Controls which are intended to filter out objectionable content. Not sure how it works, whether via whitelist of blacklist, but it's worth a try, eh? They have a discounted offer here, (might have to scroll down, it's below the stand-alone antivirus offerings.) http://www.my-etrust.com/microsoft/ -- Gary S. Terhune MS MVP Shell/User "Moonraker" wrote in message ... Hi there, We are on win 98, and are using MSN uk as our home page/browser. We have other browsers in our favourites list, i.e google, Alta vista, etc, for specific searches when required. My son, just turned thirteen, is obviously coming to "that age" when guys realise that girls are that little bit different, I don,t mean that they just take all your money and eat ALL the chocolate. He is obviously becoming aware and is having education at school, we answer all his questions (some of them you feel like saying "go ask your Mother"), we have books at home that cover the subject and will read with him and explain when needed. Yesterday, whilst we were watching the Olympics, "J" was on the computer playing a game, - bored with that he decided to go on the internet where he sometimes plays other games or searches for what his heart desires, usually about space etc, the only computer in the house connected to the internet is in the lounge, as we do not like the idea of "J" being alone for hours on his own on the internet. But, yesterday he typed in the word "virgina" in the search window and got a bit of a surprise, basically an endless list of disgusting porn sites. He later told us what had happened, as he is usually very honest, and we asked him to show us what he had done, WE explained the dangers of the internet and that we wanted to keep him safe and that the internet was just like the world, there are safe places to go and very dangerous places, there are safe people and dangerous people, etc,etc I had a look at the sites he had visited and they were in my opinion "hard porn", and although I am average and open minded with regards to "that sort of thing" i.e I am not a monk, we would not normally bother with such material. Pandora's box has been opened and although "J" understands, we are worried about the ease with which this type of site can be accessed, sometimes by accident. What is the best way, in your opinion, to limit /block access to unsavoury information without affecting our searches. p.s We have a private I.S.P ( my brother in law runs his own company and rents a large amount of server space to host customers web sites etc), so unlike AOL etc there is not the add on bits and pieces like screening and anti-spam etc. Many thanks for your help, Steve. |

... Hi there, We are on win 98, and are using MSN uk as our home page/browser. We have other browsers in our favourites list, i.e google, Alta vista, etc, for specific searches when required. Sorry, I don't know the answer to your query (it looks like lots of suggestions are coming in), but thought I'd point out as it might save some confusion sometime - unless the above was a slip of the tongue or electronic equivalent: MSN uk is (I think) an internet service provider. They have presumably set your browser to start on one of their pages, i. e. as its "home page". The browser is very likely to be Internet Explorer; other browsers include Netscape, Opera, Firefox, and (IIRR) AllByOne. Google, AltaVista, etc. are search engines; you can use (most of) them with (almost) any browser. (The fact you mentioned "favourites" does indeed suggest you're using IE as your browser, as Netscape calls them bookmarks [and stores them differently].) Hope that is helpful ...
