98SE Freeze / Hang
Frequently when using the computer I will move the mouse(MS PS2 attached
optical) and the system will freeze - can't move the mouse cursor and none of its buttons work. Usually after hitting Ctr-Alt-Del 2-5 times the system will restart(often running scandisk but not always). Sometimes I must power off. Nothing suspicious happens before the freeze. Sounds to me like the mouse/driver is implicated. Has anybody else experienced this behavior and have any recommendations? This happens as frequently as 1-2 times/day. Thanks. |

First suspect in instances of computers freezing is overheating. Check inside the case for any buildup of dust or fuzz and remove it with compressed air. Make certain the CPU and power supply fans are spinning freely with no noise or vibration. If the CPU cooling fan is more than 3 years old replace it with a ball bearing fan that is specifically rated for use with your CPU make, model, and speed. Another prime suspect for this type of behavior is video drivers. Go to your video card manufacturer's web site, download the latest Windows 98 drivers for your specific video card model, and install them. Good luck Ron Martell Duncan B.C.
