Pebble, you left out the colon ( after "C:". Now, let me add "/ON" to
sort by name...

Let me think about that. Are you sure they are files you can account
for? Are you up-to-date on virus scans? Let us see some this way...

"START, Programs, MS-DOS Prompt". Then,
(a) DIR C: /ON /P
There is a colon ( in there.
"/P" will pause it, so you can copy. Hit any key to continue.
(b) Use the "Mark" button, outline with mouse, "Copy" & post for
inspection.

But don't post half a million of them!

You are welcome. I see "Restart in MS-DOS Mode left you in "C:\Windows"
as the Current Directory. So, it was as I said. Probably the better
solution is to move "Clean.bat" into the Path, which you chose to do.
(Still, I think it belongs in "C:\Windows\Command", not just
"C:\Windows". This is because a .bat IS a DOS command.

Anyway, here is how to make a "Restart in MS-DOS Mode" cause C:\ to be
the Current Directory...
(a) R-Clk "DOSStart.bat" in Explorer
(b) Select Properties, and
(c) Put "C:\" into the "Working" box.
....Naturally, that won't hold, if one puts "CD something" into
something, such as into that CDINST thing. "C:\" will only be the
initial Current Directory.

I see nothing seriously amiss with your Config.sys & Autoexec.bat files.
Here is how to set the PATH properly, so that there is no duplication of
directories. Add that "SET" line to the bottom. I have also adjusted a
few values.

Config.sys
******
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS /TESTMEM:OFF
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS
DEVICEHIGH=C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\DRVSPACE.SYS /MOVE
DOS=HIGH,UMB
FILESHIGH=80
BUFFERSHIGH=40,4
SET PATH=C:\Windows;C:\Windows\Command
*******

I don't know what that "DEVICEHIGH=C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\DRVSPACE.SYS
/MOVE" is all about. I do know Colorado removed one from his Config.sys.
Do you actually use CVF's *Compressed Volume Files"? But I'm not quite
sure that's what it is entirely about.

Your Autoexec.bat looks fine.

Do you have a second "CDINST.bat" in "C:\DRIVERS\CDROM"? If so, better

It doesn't do much but try to pass itself (again) "Q" in %1. %2 and %3 are

keeping it from going into an infinite loop.

Thanks for coming by, Blanton. It turned out to be the other way around,
though. It's an infinite loop when there is NO SECOND CDINST.bat in the
other folder, but just in C:. Look...

C:\WINDOWS\Desktop\CDINST.bat
========
C:
CD \windows\temp
CALL CDINST.BAT %1 %2 %3
CD \
========

C:\WINDOWS\Temp\CDINST.bat
========
echo "Howdy"
========

Clicking the one on the Desktop produces...
========
C:\WINDOWS\DesktopCD \windows\temp

C:\WINDOWS\TEMPCALL CDINST.BAT

C:\WINDOWS\TEMPecho "Howdy"
"Howdy"

C:\WINDOWS\TEMP

C:\WINDOWS\TEMPCD \

C:\
========
....& the DOS window will sit there or close, depending on whether "Close
on exit" was chosen in it's Properties.

So... geez... I guess Pebble should take that REM out of her
DOSStart.bat. Apparently, the CDINST.bat she does have in
C:\DRIVERS\CDROM will execute and actually do something. It's 24K, after
all. I'll ask her to post it for examination.

YES, PEBBLE.. post it here, the one in C:\DRIVERS\CDROM.
And, take that REM out of DOSStart.bat.

Pebble, YES, post all 26kb of C:\DRIVERS\CDROM\CDINST.bat, but in the
other portion of this thread, where Blanton can have a look at it too.

Yes, that is a comma in "BUFFERSHIGH=40,4". Here...
.....Quote of C:\Windows\Config.txt.........
BUFFERS/BUFFERSHIGH
===================

This command allocates memory for a specified number
of disk buffers when your system starts. Use the
BUFFERSHIGH command to load the buffers in the upper
memory area. You can use these commands only in your
Config.sys file.

Syntax

BUFFERS=n[,m]
BUFFERSHIGH=n[,m]

Parameters

n
Specifies the number of disk buffers. The value of
n must be in the range 1 through 99.

m
Specifies the number of buffers in the secondary
buffer cache. The value of m must be in the range
0 through 8. The default is 0 (no secondary cache
buffers).

If you specify an invalid value for n or m, BUFFERS uses
the default settings.
......EOQ of C:\Windows\Config.txt.......

OK, if you have no compressed drives, take that line...
DEVICEHIGH=C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\DRVSPACE.SYS /MOVE
....out of Config.sys. Or, put a REM in front of it.

Look over the following, & post your MSDOS.sys, if you cannot figure
what I am about to suggest...

Here is a way to edit MSDOS.sys. This is an important file.

(1) You won't even see it, unless "START, Settings, Folder Options, View
tab" is bolted "Show all files"; may as well uncheck "Hide file
extensions..." too.
(2) Find "C:\MSDOS.sys" and back it up. Call the backup MSDOS.bck, in
C:\.
(3) Then, R-Clk "C:\MSDOS.sys", Properties, and uncheck Read-Only.

(4) Open it in Notepad, &
(a) Put the following two lines into the [Options] section,
to suppress the loading of that driver(s)....
Dblspace=0
Drvspace=0
(b) Save it & Exit Notepad

(5) Then, R-Clk MSDOS.sys again, and make it Read-Only. Reboot.
(6) Can't reboot? Then, in DOS, copy the backup over the one you've
mussed.
(a) ATTRIB -R -S -H C:\MSDOS.sys
(b) COPY C:\MSDOS.bck C:\MSDOS.sys
(c) ATTRIB +R +S +H C:\MSDOS.sys

Contents of the Windows Msdos.sys File

Here is mine. If you use CVFs (Compressed Volume Files), do not include
Dblspace=0 & Drvspace=0. Do not include Network=0, if you connect to a
Network. Logo=0 suppresses the Windows logo at boot.

Thanks PCR,
Yep, I've done all that changing config.sys thing,
The line "BUFFERSHIGH=40(comma)4? not 40(full stop) 4?" -Not that I'm
questioning you PCR !
My other CDINST.Bat, which is in C:\DRIVERS\CDROM is 26kb of text -
shall I post it?
Those undelectable files in C don't paste from the prompt screen too
well, they display OK in OEM text on my clipboard. One of the file names
is the symbol for infinity - the others are just strange angled things?
There is no MSDOS name in the properties of the file, no file extension
zero bytes in length and the name of the files is just "_"

The drvspace - dblspace is some sort of disk compression utility, its
installed in my programme files Plus! Themes folder for some strange
reason, there is a separate folder in there named system with compresson
agent in also. Always thought it a strange place for such a utility.
It comes with win98 SE. It's in Win98_45.cab file. My drives aren't
compressed though? Don't think I want it...

You are welcome. I see "Restart in MS-DOS Mode left you in

"C:\Windows"
as the Current Directory.

(b) Select Properties, and
(c) Put "C:\" into the "Working" box.
...Naturally, that won't hold, if one puts "CD something" into
something, such as into that CDINST thing. "C:\" will only be the
initial Current Directory.

I see nothing seriously amiss with your Config.sys & Autoexec.bat

files.
Here is how to set the PATH properly, so that there is no duplication

of
directories. Add that "SET" line to the bottom. I have also adjusted a
few values.

Config.sys
******
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS /TESTMEM:OFF
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS
DEVICEHIGH=C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\DRVSPACE.SYS /MOVE
DOS=HIGH,UMB
FILESHIGH=80
BUFFERSHIGH=40,4
SET PATH=C:\Windows;C:\Windows\Command
*******

I don't know what that "DEVICEHIGH=C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\DRVSPACE.SYS
/MOVE" is all about. I do know Colorado removed one from his

Config.sys.
Do you actually use CVF's *Compressed Volume Files"? But I'm not quite
sure that's what it is entirely about.

Your Autoexec.bat looks fine.

Well, thanks guys, it's starting to make a bit more sense! Here goes:-

May as well leave that REM in front of "REM CALL C:\CDINST.BAT Q", in
DosStart.bat. It may have done something once, but it only plays with
the Current Directory (CD) now. Do you recall what the CD was when the
REM was not there? And don't forget to say what it is now. ******Don't
recall PCR, how do I find what it is now ??
Have put Clean.bat in Windows. Has always been in C though and all I
ever typed was clean then pressed enter!
Grisoft says no virus, these files were created the same time that I

was
shelling in windows when trouble shooting clean.bat so I reckon it's

to
do with them. As for bats and commands belonging in Windows, I have

many
in C and some double entries in Windows and C.
I have to go, the bats are coming in the doors and
windows, everything is turning black...........................they're
shelling me.............

I'll snip. Well, you forgot to answer...
(a) What is the Current Directory, when you "Restart in MS-DOS

Mode"?
That is, do you see "C:\" as the DOS Prompt,
or something else such as "C:\Windows"

Since Clean.bat was not in the Path, it could only run if it were

in
the
Current Directory (or if you called it using it's full Path, i.e.,
"C:\Clean.bat"). You put it into the Path, when you moved it to
"C:\Windows"; so, it ran well.

Probably, it is better to move it to "C:\Windows\Command", though.

It will also execute from there, no matter what the Current

Directory or
the Path is. And that is where DOS commands & .bat's belong.

[snip]

That makes a lot of sense.
Pebble either had it open to C:\ or she would change it to that

before typing
clean .
Good catch.

Oops, the weird files! Uh...

The one that is a tilde (~) or infinity can be deleted. It was a flaw in
one/more of the IE cumulative critical updates, which has been corrected
now. If you took the latest one, it shall never return after you delete
it now. It's possible there are some in other folders, as well...

"START, Find, F/F, ~*.*" Tilde-asterisk-dot-asterisk

....every file with JUST a tilde for a name & no file type may be
deleted. These were a failed attempt to backup your Address Book, as you
will see if you "Highlight one, R-Clk it, Open with, WAB" before
deleting it.

Nothing is coming to me on what the other ones may be...

(1) Try...
"START, Programs, MS-DOS Prompt". Then,
(a) DIR C: /ON /P /V C:\Windows\Temp\DIRV.txt
There is a colon ( in there.
There is a "" (right arrow) in there, which will cause the output
to go to a file.
"/P" will pause it, so you can copy. Hit any key to continue.
(b) Open "C:\Windows\Temp\DIRV.txt" in Explorer, and post some of them
from that file.

(2) Take a look at them in QuikView. What is inside...?...
Try QuikView, although it won't get them all. You may first need to
install it from "Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Accessories".
Then...

(1) "START, Find, F/F, QUIKVIEW.EXE"
(2) R-Clk it, point to "Send To", select "Desktop (create shortcut)"
(3) R-Clk the shortcut on the Desktop, select "Cut"
(4) Open Explorer to "C:\WINDOWS\SendTo", R-Clk right pane, select
"Paste"

Now, when there is a file you want to see: R-Clk it, point to "Send To",
select "QuikView".

(To see more files displayed in Explorer, "START, Settings, Folder
Options, View tab". Bolt "Show all files"; also, clear "Hide file
extensions for known file types".)
