Default Problems with Word 2000 crash

What happens when you do:
Start Run type "winword.exe /a" (without the quotes,
and note the space before the forward slash)?

For more information try he

I'm new to this group so apologies if this is a topic that has arisen
before.

A friend has a Dell desktop (P3/1GHz/384RAM) running Windows ME. It
came preloaded with Works suite 6 and Word 2000 SR1.

Last week it started playing up, Attempting to run Word went to the
banner, then a very small step to the next screen (part of the banner
went white) then it froze. The mouse would move but nothing else -
power reset was the only answer.

I reinstalled Word twice but to no avail, so I reinstalled ME. When it
completed (which took a good hour) I ran Word and it worked perfectly
- twice. I think I then opened IE to make sure it still had broadband
access, which it did. Then I ran Word again - it went to the banner,
then a box opened in front of it indicating that Word had caused a
fault with User.exe and a restart of Windows might be required. I
closed it and Word and tried Word again - same thing - so I restarted
Windows. When I tried to run Word again it was back as it had been at
square one.

As far as I can tell, everything else works perfectly, including Star
Office which can read the established Word files without problem.

I doubt a virus as the machine runs McAfee 7 and ZoneAlarm, and I
have run AdAware6 as well. Until last Wednesday Word had behaved
perfectly since new, and the machine has had broadband for nearly two
months without problem, and I can find nothing about it in the M$ KB.

Anyone any ideas?

George,

I think the problem is that Woody hasn't got his clock set to allow for summer
time and thus his posts appear to be posted an hour later than in fact they
were.
