patch for Explorer for 256 color Systray icons!
There has been such great discussion on various fixes, mods etc. I had
to add this one. Have you ever looked at your systray icons and thought, surely MS could have done better than the poor color rendering I see! Being one who likes to use WinAMP, and being their systray icons NEED 256 color rendering to have eye appeal, decided a change needed to be made. So, here's a patch for SE users to get Explorer to display 256 color icons in the Systray: http://www.dr-hoiby.com/TrayIconIn256Color/ Enjoy! |

patch for Explorer for 256 color Systray icons!

I had a look at the version of explorer.exe I have and it's 4.72.3612.1700 (168 kb in size). The file date is Jan 29, 1999 (not sure if that's accurate, but it's not 4/23/1999 as you would expect). I believe that the standard version of explorer.exe on a win-98se system is 4.72.3110.1 (176 kb). I also have another explorer.exe that identifies itself as version 4.72.3612.1700 and is 131 kb in size. |

patch for Explorer for 256 color Systray icons!
Hmmm, odd. Although if I remember (installed the patched Explorer many,
many years ago) the patched Explorer (this is not a 'patch', it's a patched Explorer.exe) and the author's patched Explorer REPLACES v4.72.3110.1. Whether he replaces it with an exact version I don't know. But there is one other thing; he also shows where one needs to edit Explorer to enable 256 colors. I may have done that with an updated version because like you, I have v4.72.3612.1700. Perhaps you patched your own too? It's quite easy to do, and maybe that's why you have a later version capable of 256 colors? BTW; did you notice this, you said: I have and it's 4.72.3612.1700 (168 kb in size). and I also have another explorer.exe that identifies itself as version 4.72.3612.1700 and is 131 kb in size. So there are two different Explorer.exe files with the same version number but different sizes!! Explorer.exe here is v4.72.3612.1700 1/29/1999 168kb. Does your explorer that's 131kb work ?? |

Rather than this here, look where these things are produced AND what may occur, PLUS what else might be needed. http://www.msfn.org/board/lofiversio...hp/t99266.html Remember though, these are non-standard AND may cause issues in your particular system. Also note that most of these parties are running HIGHLY modified 98 systems or no longer running it at all, just doing modifications. -- MEB http://peoplescounsel.org/ref/windows-main.htm Windows Info, Diagnostics, Security, Networking http://peoplescounsel.org The "real world" of Law, Justice, and Government ___--- |

Yes - it works. It has a slightly different icon compared to the other explorer files (168k and 176k). This 131k version came from something called "WINDOWS98 SE ver. 4.7a" which is a set of files created by a Polish group of win-98 enthusiasts. Just to be clear - I haven't installed that 4.7a set of files, and I don't have that 131k version of explorer.exe in my /windows directory. Also - I practically never browse my file system using explorer.exe anyways (unless double-clicking "My Computer" launches explorer.exe in some way). |
