Default What? Where's the Windows Explorer association with this file?

Right now, there is a blank, 'unassociated', icon in front of the
video.flv file. If I double click on the filename, it opens FLV
Player and the video plays. If I copy the video and change the
extension, Windows doesn't complain, which means Windows does NOT
think there is any association for this file.

Well, it's schizophrenic (-:! It obviously has an association because
when you double-click the file, the right application runs: it just
doesn't either show the right icon, nor show the "change icon" box when
you look for it.

I tried to follow all your directions, but I couldn't find any of
those 'resource' things

As a short cut step, I thought I'd outsmart Windows by copying
the .flv to a new one video.flvv and then assign the FLV Player to
that.

I think I might have tried to do the same in your position!

Ok so I double click on C:\My Documents\SWFFiles\video.flvv; browse
and assign FLV Player, click and get an error message:
can't find C:\My folder ...
Say What?! Wouldn't play. But after closing the FLV Player
application, I did get an icon (miniature version of .exe) assigned to
the video.flvv file.

MEB: he means he got an icon that looked the same as his desktop
shortcut to the player, but smaller.

As a test, I moved the video to the root directory and double clicked
and it plays perfectly! Somehow the application and Windows is NOT
cruising the file pathnames in my machine. What's irritating is that
all of the names I use for folders would work, because they have no
weird characters, only the folder names that Microsoft came up with
will not work, because they have weird characters, names like "My
Documents" That gap is a killer to a lot of apps.

I agree. However, it has a real 8.3 name too: if you right-click on MY
Documents and look at its properties (or open a command prompt in the
directory containing it and do a dir), you'll see what it is (probably
MyDocu~1). (Irritatingly, this - being able to see it from Properties I
mean, not the underlying existence itself - has been removed from XP,
why I don't know.)
[]
I'd agree with MEB to see if the player has any association controls
itself.

Post your replies embedded inside the post to which you are replying (as
I'm doing here), rather than all at the bottom. [All at the bottom is
still better than top-posting, but only slightly (-:!]

Yes, I agree the fact that the video.flv plays means there is an
association. But I can't find it.

I do understand what you are asking! Basically you have an association
(it opens with the right player), but (a) you don't have the right icon,
(b) you can't see it as a filetype in the association list (so you can't
use that means to change the icon, for example). And, it doesn't
complain when you change the extension. (MEB - like Robert, my
experience is that Windows says "are you sure" when you change the
extension on _any_ associated filetype, not just system/protected ones,
and doesn't when you do so on a file with an extension that's not
associated, or a file with no extension.)

The icon that was added to video.flvv was a little image like a small
version of the FLV Player, not anything to do with .exe files.

From memory Windows complains whenever I try to change the extension
of *any* associated file. And never complains when I change the
extension of any un-associated file. When I changed video.flvv back
to video.flv Windows complained. When I changed video.flv to
video.flvv no complaint.

After using the 'always open with' checked and opening the flvv file
with FLV Player; I had expected FLV Player to open the flvv file no
matter where it is just like with other applications. Checking
association of .flvv with FLV Player, the association looks like all
the others, simply a word open, nothing else. Looks exactly like the
association for my docx2rtf.exe utility that only opens .docx files
Don't see anything special around at all. Sure is a mystery.

There is a list of actions, such as OPEN, PLAY, EDIT, and so on;
sometimes only OPEN is there. (Look under .wav, for example - that might
have more of them.) To the right (IIRR) of the list of actions (which
may have only one entry in it), there are buttons to amend what exactly
is done when you apply that action: I think one of these buttons is
EDIT. (I'm on an XP system so going from memory, sorry.) Highlight the
word OPEN, and click the EDIT button: you will get a new window showing
you that the action is "xyz.exe %1" or something similar, with xyz being
the executable of the player, and possibly having its whole path quoted.

Post within the materials if necessary, even older parts if necessary
to address or re-address them.

the application or some of the other formats it may support. Regardless,
the association exists so you really have no issue there.

His problem is minor, in that he has the association - the player opens
- but not the icon, nor the filetype under associated filetypes or
whatever it's called in Explorer.

The icon that was added to video.flvv was a little image like a small
version of the FLV Player, not anything to do with .exe files.

Oh, then you DO have the correct icon, pulled from the EXE or
elsewhere. IF you want to find out where it found it [apparently when
creating the special association you created], open the icon setting
area.. or use that one.

(I would guess it got it from within the player's .exe file.) He only
got this icon with the new ".flvv" filetype he created, and then
associated in the normal way, though - not with the .flv files, even
though they do open in the right player.
[]
You've drawn me into one of the Windows discussion areas I avoid or
leave for others. I thought you actually had some association and
opening issues, I must have missed your intent from the beginning.

He does, but minor. (He has an association he can't get at, so can't
change the icon it uses for those files in Explorer, and also Explorer
although it has the association doesn't object when he tries to change
the extension on such a file, though does for any other associated
filetype.)

Works great!, full screen, just double click on the .flv file and the
video runs.

Except...

The icon in front of the .flv stays generic as though nothing will
open it.

Going to the Windows Explorer I went down through the whole list
trying to find an association, nothing!

Thought I'd manually just change the icon, so I right click on
the .flv file and view properties. *That's so brief as to be
laughable. *Since Win98 thinks no application can open the .flv file
there is no icon to change.

Ok, so how do I 'force' this association? *I could ignore it, but I
keep feeling pangs of panic seeing that blank icon.

My registry has the following key:

*HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.flv

The "Default" value is "Flash Video File".

I then navigate to the following key:

*HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Flash Video File

There is an icon sub-key ...

*HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Flash Video File\DefaultIcon

... whose value is ...

"C:\Program Files\Riva\Riva FLV Player\Riva FLV Player.exe,0"

The Open Command is ...

"C:\Program Files\Riva\Riva FLV Player\Riva FLV Player.exe" "%1"

Thank you for alerting me to look around in the registry.

The default for .flv came up with NO icon and NO open command, instead
it was named sothink flv player then had command under that?!
Don't know if this is important, but it is different:
the listing for .flvv was very interesting. It had no icon either, but
the open command was different than the command above
instead of C:\... .exe" "%1" there was onlly a single double
quote ...exe" %1"
that error in the listing may have caused windows inability to track
the path?

Can I add the entry DefaultIcon? So how do I find out which icon to
use? exe.0 or exe.1 or ????

Just tried editing and can't seem to add DefaultIcon entry

seems like you found part of the problem.

CORRECTION:
for the one that works I have:
""C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMO... ...EXE" "%1""
that line starts with two double quotes and ends with two double
quotes
for the one that doesn't work it looks different:
""C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMO... ...EXE" %1""
bad eyes, who can see this stuff?

Now where to look at icons? I remember once seeing tons somewhere.

You could just suck it and see - i. e. try it, and see what you get; or,
you could start the change icon process for some other filetype, point
the icon browser at the player executable, and see what's there (the
first one will be .0, the second .1, and so on - I think), before
cancelling the icon change process (for the other filetype). I suspect
there's only one icon in the .exe.

Just tried editing and can't seem to add DefaultIcon entry

You could just delete the .flv filetype from where you've found it in
the registry, and hope that Explorer will then see it as an unassociated
filetype and let you set it up in the normal way. That might be safer.
Ideally do a registry save (ERU if you have it installed) before
hacking.
