What? Where's the Windows Explorer association with this file?
In message
, Robert A. Macy writes: [] Right now, there is a blank, 'unassociated', icon in front of the video.flv file. If I double click on the filename, it opens FLV Player and the video plays. If I copy the video and change the extension, Windows doesn't complain, which means Windows does NOT think there is any association for this file. Well, it's schizophrenic (-:! It obviously has an association because when you double-click the file, the right application runs: it just doesn't either show the right icon, nor show the "change icon" box when you look for it. I tried to follow all your directions, but I couldn't find any of those 'resource' things As a short cut step, I thought I'd outsmart Windows by copying the .flv to a new one video.flvv and then assign the FLV Player to that. I think I might have tried to do the same in your position! Ok so I double click on C:\My Documents\SWFFiles\video.flvv; browse and assign FLV Player, click and get an error message: can't find C:\My folder ... Say What?! Wouldn't play. But after closing the FLV Player application, I did get an icon (miniature version of .exe) assigned to the video.flvv file. MEB: he means he got an icon that looked the same as his desktop shortcut to the player, but smaller. As a test, I moved the video to the root directory and double clicked and it plays perfectly! Somehow the application and Windows is NOT cruising the file pathnames in my machine. What's irritating is that all of the names I use for folders would work, because they have no weird characters, only the folder names that Microsoft came up with will not work, because they have weird characters, names like "My Documents" That gap is a killer to a lot of apps. I agree. However, it has a real 8.3 name too: if you right-click on MY Documents and look at its properties (or open a command prompt in the directory containing it and do a dir), you'll see what it is (probably MyDocu~1). (Irritatingly, this - being able to see it from Properties I mean, not the underlying existence itself - has been removed from XP, why I don't know.) [] I'd agree with MEB to see if the player has any association controls itself. -- J. P. Gilliver. , Robert A. Macy writes: [] This is getting a bit tricky. Trying to answer without pulling the post down for accurate quoting. Post your replies embedded inside the post to which you are replying (as I'm doing here), rather than all at the bottom. [All at the bottom is still better than top-posting, but only slightly (-:!] Yes, I agree the fact that the video.flv plays means there is an association. But I can't find it. I do understand what you are asking! Basically you have an association (it opens with the right player), but (a) you don't have the right icon, (b) you can't see it as a filetype in the association list (so you can't use that means to change the icon, for example). And, it doesn't complain when you change the extension. (MEB - like Robert, my experience is that Windows says "are you sure" when you change the extension on _any_ associated filetype, not just system/protected ones, and doesn't when you do so on a file with an extension that's not associated, or a file with no extension.) The icon that was added to video.flvv was a little image like a small version of the FLV Player, not anything to do with .exe files. From memory Windows complains whenever I try to change the extension of *any* associated file. And never complains when I change the extension of any un-associated file. When I changed video.flvv back to video.flv Windows complained. When I changed video.flv to video.flvv no complaint. After using the 'always open with' checked and opening the flvv file with FLV Player; I had expected FLV Player to open the flvv file no matter where it is just like with other applications. Checking association of .flvv with FLV Player, the association looks like all the others, simply a word open, nothing else. Looks exactly like the association for my docx2rtf.exe utility that only opens .docx files Don't see anything special around at all. Sure is a mystery. There is a list of actions, such as OPEN, PLAY, EDIT, and so on; sometimes only OPEN is there. (Look under .wav, for example - that might have more of them.) To the right (IIRR) of the list of actions (which may have only one entry in it), there are buttons to amend what exactly is done when you apply that action: I think one of these buttons is EDIT. (I'm on an XP system so going from memory, sorry.) Highlight the word OPEN, and click the EDIT button: you will get a new window showing you that the action is "xyz.exe %1" or something similar, with xyz being the executable of the player, and possibly having its whole path quoted. -- J. You could just suck it and see - i. e. try it, and see what you get; or, you could start the change icon process for some other filetype, point the icon browser at the player executable, and see what's there (the first one will be .0, the second .1, and so on - I think), before cancelling the icon change process (for the other filetype). I suspect there's only one icon in the .exe. Just tried editing and can't seem to add DefaultIcon entry seems like you found part of the problem. You could just delete the .flv filetype from where you've found it in the registry, and hope that Explorer will then see it as an unassociated filetype and let you set it up in the normal way. That might be safer. Ideally do a registry save (ERU if you have it installed) before hacking. -- J. P. Gilliver.
