Very Slow ME Startup
Hello
First time here so apologies if I am duplicating previous questions. I have decided to start using an old ME computer I have, for a couple of tasks. The problem is that it takes about 4 - 5 minutes to boot. When I used to use it booting was very quick. - a minute of maybe two. I know it is a vague question but - what can I do to speed it up or find out what is slowing it down? Thanks in advance for any assistance. Some more details below. Echy I haven't added any new hardware & the only new software is updates or installation of:- - all MS security updates/patches - latest anti-virus software ( Vet.com.au) - CCleaner - Spybot S & D - Ad-aware - cwshredder - Spyware Blaster The hardware is:- [Windows Millennium Edition (build 4.90.3000)] 450 megahertz Intel Pentium III 192 Megabytes Installed Memory small HDD - 2.1 GB with 0.8 GB free |

Even though you have plenty of RAM, ME wants a swap file on the hard disk. You are lucky it is starting at all. Besides that, have you ever considered whether you are wearing a little too much armour? Your horse might not be able to carry you into battle. -the watcher- |

Check the Startup listing in MSCONFIG - see what's starting at boot, and
trim it to the minimum. Check the Deice Manager while in Safe Mode - remove any flagged entries, and report back on any duplicated entries -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2006, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.crashfixpc.com/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's "Echy" wrote in message ... I have got a spare 10 GB HDD - would that be adequate? I love your - "Your horse might not be able to carry you into battle" expression :-) I am certainly open to suggestion/advice on that point. The armour is my "standard suite" of protective programs except usually have Windows Defender as well - going off that at a great rate of knots due to update problems all the time. Thanks again Echy |

Good luck - post back with any further/detailed queries!
WRT adding another HD - it'd certainly help! 2.1GB (which I missed the first time around) is really too small for a Win ME machine, and I'm surprised that you still have 800MB free, if there's anything other than the OS on it. a 4GB boot partition on a 10 GB drive, with the Data put into the other 6GB would be about the best way out on that you should defrag the HD as well - which would certainly help in the current situation. -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2006, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.crashfixpc.com/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's "Echy" wrote in message ... Thanks again. Will be changing disk & will do as you suggest. BTW definitely 800 MB free. For your interest computer has ME, broadband internet connection software, the anti-malware, anti-virus s/w detailed in original post, MS Word & Excel, Adobe Reader, WinZip, HP BJ printer software, IrfanView, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Thunderbird. The armour is my "standard suite" of protective programs except usually have Windows Defender as well - going off that at a great rate of knots due to update problems all the time. The armour you need depends on the nature of the war you want to wage. A bank does not spend $2m a year to protect a vault that only contains $1m. Work out what threats there are to your machine and then only employ countermeasures that are relevant to those threats. It might be useful if you tell the anti-virus newsgroup what applications you want to run and what type of access you're making to the net. I'm sure someone there will advise you an appropriate anti-virus protection. You may well find that you will not have to spend any dollars at all. -the watcher- |
