Memory/Hard drive space problem?
I have an eMachine 433i that has a 96 mg memory and a 4 gig hard drive
.. When I go to My computer and look at Properties for the C: drive, it shows that I have almost 600 mg of vacant space. However, sometimes when I get on the internet and listen to a web radio program, or watch a streaming video on a web site, the computer will start slowing down and almost freeze. If I attempt to clear out the Temporary files, a window will appear and say that I do not have enough space to load the program. Can someone tell me what's going on and how I can get around this problem? Is it a memory problem? Any help will be appreciated. |

Monitor the size of your swap file before and during your radio/video
activities and see if the swap file increases in size where you have little or no free space left. You can use sysmon.exe to monitor it, -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP for W98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo wrote in message ... Memory/Hard drive space problem?
You have an emachine with 96MB of RAM, but it will have an
onboard video chip (on the motherboard) that uses system RAM. It could be set to use as much as 32MB. Check in the BIOS setup program by pressing the entry key specified to enter SETUP on the startup screen. You should be able to see how much RAM is set to be shared by the video chip. You can try lowering it, or adding more RAM, because that site is using RAM to load the video into, probably so that it doesn't leave a copy on your hard drive. Next time get a proper computer, not an emachine. Memory/Hard drive space problem?
Thanks for the response. When I display the swap file it, it shows
with a max scale of 244m. When watching video or listening to radion, it pops up to 122 and stays there until I go back to non video/radio mode. At 122 it straight lines as though it is at the max level. Does that mean that the swap file is only 122? If so, why does it show on a 244 scale? Any further help will be appreciated. Memory/Hard drive space problem?
I believe the W98 memory manager creates a swap file size that is based on
what you have running at setup. If you then used it all, the memory manager would make the swap file bigger. It doesn't sound like the swap file is eating all the space based on your observation. I assume you watched the swap file size until the machine started to slow down. When it starts to slow down, check the properties again and see how much space is left and see if it is indeed out of space. 600 mb is not much hard drive space considering today's software and the processes that run. -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP for W98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo wrote in message ... Memory/Hard drive space problem?
Here is another investigative tool...
WinTop will show as many tasks running as "START, Run, MSInfo32, Software Environment, Running Tasks", which is twice as many as Ctrl-Alt-Del. Microsoft's WinTop works in Win98, though written for Win95. It shows individual CPU & RAM usage figures & updates it's display every 2 seconds. Get WinTop from http://www.microsoft.com/windows95/d.../w95kerneltoy/ Download it into a folder of it's own. It's a single executable called "W95KRNLTOYS.EXE". When you click it, it will unzip and reveal many applications. All of them are a danger to Win98, except WinTop; delete them. You will be left with: W95KRNLTOYS.EXE WINTOP.INF WINTOP.TXT WINTOP.VXD WINTOP.EXE You R-Clk WINTOP.INF & select "Install". Click OK to the requestor stating that a disk is required. Another requestor will appear & allow you to locate the folder that has the files listed above. WinTop.exe will be copied to C:\Windows. You may go there, R-Clk it, point to "Send To" & create a shortcut on the Desktop. Click it to execute. Otherwise, "START, Run, WinTop". -- Thanks or Good Luck, There may be humor in this post, and, Naturally, you will not sue, should things get worse after this, PCR wrote in message ... | Thanks for the response.
