Default Cant get Win98se to read Sandisk Flash Stick

I just picked up a 4gb Sandisk Cruzer Micro flash stick and it is not
recognized in Win98se. I DO have NUSB33 installed. I went to the
Sandisk website and they do not have a driver for Win98. They do have
one for Cruzer (not the Micro). I installed it and it only read as a
2gb stick. Is there any way to make this thing work? Otherwise it
goes right back to Walmart.

Thanks
Jim

This is normal. From Sandisk's point of view Win98 became
obsolete 6 or 7 years ago.

At a DOS prompt, type ...

fdisk /status

Does your flash stick show up as a hard drive? If so, does it have
more than one partition?

Otherwise r-click the drive in Explorer and check its Properties. Does
it have a FAT32 or FAT16 file system? If FAT16, then you'll have to
reformat it as FAT32.

Franc, I recall trying one of those Sandisk Cruzers and IIRC it was preinstalled
with U3. Once that was nuked, 98SE recognised it fine.

This is the same thing I have, a Sandisk Cruzer. Their website says
it's a U3 stick, yet their site also says that all their sticks that
have it contain the U3 logo on the package. I still have the package
and it does not have that logo. However, the 4 gig stick shows about
65 megs of used space, and there is nothing on it, except about a 50
byte text file I put on it to test it.

Therefore I dont know if it has it or not. Fdisk does not recognise
it. I have Partition Magic, that dont recognize it either.

98SE does recognise it fine now that I got the correct driver.
However, if it does have U3, I want to nuke it. I have no need for
that. How do I nuke it?
According to an article I read about U3, formatting it will not always
remove the U3.

It would be interesting seeing that article, because I don't believe that
formatting won't remove it. I always format new flash drives to get rid of
that crap.

I assume formatting it is the same as formatting a
floppy or hard disk, right?

Basically, yes (except for the media).

Anyone have any ideas?

I won't use SanDisk with my Win98SE machine because of the driver issues.
The Sony MicroVault ones are much more compatible.

This is the last Sandisk product I will buy !!!!

For a Win98SE machine, right on.

I dont remember where I read that article. I spent hours reading
numerous websites to find out WTF U3 is all about and trying to find
drivers.

OK, I just formatted it, and it works fine. I never formatted these
before, but I will from now on.

Anyone have any ideas?

I assume those Sonys are only available by mail order????
The only other brand I see locally is PNY.

I got mine at Circuit City some time ago. Since Circuit City has gone
bust, what about Best Buy? OR - maybe order it on the Internet. But
mine were only 1 GB.

This is the last Sandisk product I will buy !!!!

I wont buy them for any machine anymore. When I buy new (blank)
media, I expect it to be blank.

Apparently not with flash drives.

I dont recall ever getting floppies
with stuff on them, but I do recall buying a box of them and getting a
free one with AOL or something like that on them. But that was a free
disk, not what I paid for. If Sandisk wants to offer U3, put it on
their website for download, not on my flash drive, since not everyone
used XP or Vista. The article said it would not work on earlier
versions of Windows, Linux, or a Mac. Yet, it says you MUST put it
into an XP or Vista computer to remove it. (Like I just have one of
those sitting around).

Not if you format it in DOS. :-)
(of course, most of the crowd these days (for whom that notice is written)
are on XP or Vista, and don't have it anymore)

And, here's the real joke. Sandisk on their website says they do not
support Win98. They do not have a driver available.

Right.

So, I sent them
an email. They wanted me to sign up in order to send an online email,
which I refused. Like why the f**k do I need to provide personal info
to ask a technical question. I did find another email link with an
actual email address, and it said "DO NOT send technical questions".
Well, I used my email software and sent it. Then after about 5 days I
get an automated reply, which tells me they are going to send me an
email (that's really stupid). Then I get another automated reply
(which they sent 2 minutes later), which tells me my answer is in my
Sandisk email box (on their site), and it tells me what to use for
user name and password to get there. I finally go there, and they
provide a bunch of web links, which describe U3, and try to sell me U3
software, and a bunch of other useless links, and FINALLY, a link to
download a Win98 driver for my Flash stick.

Frankly I'm surprised they even had one, since they already essentially said
they didn't.

WHY? WHY? WHY cant they
just put the frikken driver on their main website and be done with it?

Or really even have a driver for Win98. Because they would say, "nobody is
using Win98 anymore, and we've "moved on" with the demand". They don't
want to have to support it *in addition to XP and Vista. (How much new
software out there will run on Win9x? (rhetorical). It's cheaper for them
not to have to write different versions of software and drivers, and support
different operating systems. And I have no doubt there is little demand for
it, in comparision to that for XP and Vista. That's where the market is.

Is there some top secret code in this driver, or do they just refuse
to let the public know they still support Win98 (sort of)? I wonder
if they would have replied at all, if I had not clearly said "if you
do not have a Win98 driver, I will return this product and purchase
from another company".....

This is why I am getting really fedup with Win98 and computers in
general. If I added up all the time I spent just to use this Flash
stick, it would be at least 5 hours, more likely 7 hours. Just to be
able to use a frikkin $15 flash stick. I'd like to send them a bill
for my time. Even 5 hours at $20 an hour is one hundred dollars, and
no computer technician will work for that low of a wage.
