xp formated hd not viewed on Windows Me system
Recently my emachine T2885 xp based system stoped working. While I dig up the
cash to repair it I have temporarily removed the hard drive and installed it in my Me based pentium 3 Gateway as a slave. I did this to transfer my important file to continue my work. All went will, but when I went into explorer to view the contents of the slave drive it would not let me. I'm at a loss! Please help! |

Your problem is probably due to the hard disk that was used with XP having
been formatted to use the NTFS filing system. Win9x systems such as Win Me cannot natively read or write to disks formatted using the NTFS system but are restricted to accessing those formatted using the FAT filing system. Third party tools do exist that when installed on Win me can allow Win Me to read NTFS formatted disks and at some cost to also write to such disks. Personally though I would not recommend the latter and feel you should stick at reading the disk only. Details of SysInternals' free reader that will allow Win 9x systems to read from a NTFS disk can be found at http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilitie...Windows98.html -- Mike Maltby Evelynv wrote: Recently my emachine T2885 xp based system stoped working. Mike M thank you so much for your advice. It took me very far, but
unfortunately I am still in a loop! The site you suggested gave me the third party file I probably do need. The problem now is that I need to place certain ntfs files from my xp installation on to a directory in my Me system, and there was no suggestions on how to do that. I searched all over the sysinternals.com web site, even countless discussions on their form. I so searched on web search engines for some clue as to this missing peice of info, but to no avail. I could'nt find it on my xp recovery disks either. Once again, do you or any other knowledgable guru out there have any idea on what I can do at this stage? What exactly are you trying to do? If you have installed the NTFS reader
from Sysinternals all that is now necessary is for you to copy or drag the files you want from the NTFS formatted disk to a Win Me partition. Do this in exactly the same way you would copy any other file. Personally I would never recommend a user to attempt to access a NTFS formatted disk on a Win 9x system but if needs must then you have to do what you have to do. I'm not certain why you mention an XP Recovery disk. You either access the XP disk from Win Me, which is the subject of this post, or you repair XP which I feel should be the subject of a new thread in a newsgroup supporting those running XP. -- Mike Maltby MVP Evelynv wrote: Mike M thank you so much for your advice.
