I ran SCANREG and it stated that there was an error in the registry and it
would fix it and restart. During restart rec'd msg "unable to initialize
anitvirus scanning engine database files" and continued w/restart. Went
to
restore and was able to create a restore point. I may have found one of
the
problems in the in 'C' There is a folder_ RESTORE and one _RESTO1. Each
has
the same subfolders. RESTO1 subfolder ARCHIVE has 9 files and is 35.5MB &
TEMP has 4 files and is 128KB. In RESTORE ARCHIVE has 0 bytes and 0 files
and TEMP has 5 files and 192KB. At present I am able to create new restore
points only and unable to initialize antivirus program.

As I said that's not entirely surprising if you have no check points.

If I attempt to create a
restore point I receive the msg "System Restore is not able to create
a restore point."

Was that all? Nothing about needing to reboot first? Since resetting SR
hasn't helped, you might want to try the following which repairs certain
damage to the registry which can be one of the reasons for being unable
to
create a checkpoint:

Run
SCANREG /FIX
from a command prompt such as Start | Run. Note that the system will
re-boot so don't have any applications open when doing this.

2. I haven't used Restore for at least a year.

So not much point in trying to establish what changes have been made to
the system since then. :-(

3. Disable and rebooted - reset and rebooted - no change.

There goes the simple fix!

4. Restore Folder on "C" is 960KB - I could not find the size of
Archive & TEMP subfolders.

I did explain how to do this using Windows Explorer. I have copied what
you need to do below. Knowing the sizes would be helpful.

To fully see this folder in
Windows Explorer you will have to enable the viewing of all hidden
files and folders. Do this in Windows Explorer as follows: Tools |
Folder Options | View and check "Show hidden files and folders" and
UNcheck "Hide protected system files".

Best of luck,

Conflict? You jest, Norton is a system destroyer and no Symantec product
should be allowed anywhere near a system running Win Me and IMO not near
any other PC either.

There's not much sense in continuing as long as a trace of Symantec's
malware remains on the system and even if removed the damage is likely to
be so severe that the only sensible option is to clean install the
operating system.

Well at least we know what caused the problem, Norton and quite possibly
LiveUpdate.

It's good to read that you can now create system restore checkpoints but I
can't help wonder how long that will last. Norton's system destroying
software is pretty destructive when installed on Win Me.

Win Me's state manager uses the _RESTORE folder. You can safely delete
the _RESTO1 folder. This is not used by Win Me nor system restore.

What would you recommend as an antivirus software replacement for Norton?

Products I would suggest you have a look at include:
Avast! (www.avast.com). Free and paid for.
AVG (www.grisoft.com and http://free.grisoft.com) both free and paid for.
eTrust EZAV from Computer Associates. For a free one year offer see
http://store.digitalriver.com/DRHM/S...PCtrialUS.html
NOD32 (http://nod32.softwaresecuritysolutions.com/)
Panda (www.pandasoftware.com)
etc.

I also use Adware, Zonelabs, ccleaner and pest patrol. Do you know of any
conflicts with these and ME? I might as well get rid of the garabage and
start with a clean reinstall of ME.

A significant number of users have found that recent versions of Zone
Alarm can prevent the creation of automatic system restore checkpoints,
primarily because it appears to fool the state manager into "believing"
that the system is never idle. Avast used to have a similar problem but
that was fixed about a month ago.

ccleaner, no problems but if you have it configured to "clean at boot"
this can cause the loss of system restore checkpoints.

I'm unaware of any issues with AdAware or PestPatrol.

If Noel Paton sees your message he may be able to add further comments.

Nope - I have nothing significant to add, except to refer Jim to
http://basconotw.mvps.org/SymRem.htm for details of the long process of
de-Norton yourself. (obviously not necessary if a clean install is
contemplated).

There have been a number of complaints about bloating of Zone Alarm, and it
slowing down systems markedly - I have no real evidence that this is caused
by the program itself, rather than by misconfiguration, or action of
malware, but just raise it as a point to note. If you're running ME on a PC
behind a NAT router, then a software firewall is really surplus to
requirements, unless you have reason to try to segregate machines on a
network.
