Default Gateway Win ME CD will not re-install on Gateway PC

My hard disk has crashed and I need to replace it. However when I was trying
to find out what was wrong I tried to re-install Windows ME from the CD I
received with the PC.
I get an error - Not a Gateway PC. I think that is because of the corruption
on the disk - many bad sectors & corrupt registry.
I downloaded the OEM bootdisk from www.bootdisk.com, that allowed me to run
scandisk on about 34% of the disk but scanreg hung.
If I buy a replacement disk drive I think I will have the same installation
problem, do you have any suggestions?
Thanks
Mo

OEM copies of Win Me are usually tied to the motherboard/processor/bios
combination rather than to any specific hard disk. Assuming the CD you
were using to try and install Win Me was the one provided by Gateway with
the PC then I can't see why you were getting the error message you mention
about the system not being a Gateway. If you do get problems when trying
to install Win Me after replacing your hard disk then I feel you should
contact Gateway for help since this is an OEM problem rather than a more
general Win Me problem. Hopefully you won't need to do so.

Thanks for your help. I'll try installing a new hard disk. I have already
tried Gateway for help & got nowhere, partly because of the age of my PC
(2001).
