Default AC97 Sound Card Shown in Device Manager but not in Multi-media Preferred devices

Hi

As some of u will remember I have flashed my BIOS ( flash bought from
e-support and specifically for my motherboard). This was because it was the
only way I could get my system to see my new 120GIG drive.

My AC97 sound card is shown in Device Manager (with no problems or
conflicts) but not in Multi-media Preferred devices on the audio tab,
however it is listed on the threads of the device tab. I have no sound or
volume control on the t/b.

I have reinstalled the on-board card and it is set to AUTO in the new BIOS.

Does it seem a BIOS problem? It obviously looks that way. If so, I can leave
it and get support from them.

It seems that Windows is seeing the Sound card and it installs it OK using
the drivers on my motherboard CD. I have even tried the Microsoft drivers
but I have read in past messages on here that they dont always work.

I dont understand why it is seen in DM but not in Multimedia.

Everything else is working OK.

I just wondered if there was anything that i had not tried.

Thanks

Nigel

Default AC97 Sound Card Shown in Device Manager but not in Multi-media Preferred devices

Hi Noel

Yes it does.
Many more items listed in sound, video...in DM in safe mode.
The AC97 sound card is there (once only). However, there are several items
around in various sections of that are listed twice.

Also there are 3 unknown devices that don't appear in DM in normal start-up.
In fact in Normal start-up there is nothing that shows any error at
all....ive expanded all branches.

Im guessing ur going to tell me to remove any item that shows up twice in DM
when in safe mode? I will wait tho...until u tell me.

Thanks for the fast reply and help

Kind Regards

Nigel

NB An after thought (not important)...is there a file that i can save which
preserves my icon layout in normal mode so that when i use safe mode i can
then go back to my original icon d/t layout??.. I tent to be icon mad on the
d/t
Ta !

Those problems should have shown up in DM in Safe Mode!

Unless your webcam/digicam are plugged in when you reboot, then windows
shouldn't attempt to reinstall the drivers for them.....
Power down
Unplug both cameras from the PC
Boot to Safe Mode,
Remove ALL 'Other Devices'
Remove ALL error-flagged Devices (yellow '!', red 'X', green '?') - you'll
have to expand the tree completely to be able to check them
Remove ALL instances of duplicated or non-existent devices
Uninstall your HP printer
Reboot to Normal Mode - what attempts to install now?
rerun hwinfo - what shows?
Reboot to Safe Mode - - what show as errored?

ActivIcons is the app you want, I suspect
http://www.cursorarts.com/ca_aifw.html

WRT DM entries -
in Safe Mode

Remove ALL instances of duplicated devices
Remove ALL error-flagged entries
Remove ALL entries in 'Other Devices'
Reboot to Normal Mode - Windows will reinstall required drivers

Default AC97 Sound Card Shown in Device Manager but not in Multi-media Preferred devices

Hi Noel
I have done what u said.
Nothing now showing as error in either SM or NM. Nothing showing more than
once except IRQ Holder for PCI Steering...that shows 7 times in SM, but not
at all in NM. I did remove all instances of it when in SM first time ( I
wasn't sure if u meant for me to do that). Ive expanded all branches both in
NM and SM and I cant see any duplicates or any errors.

hwinfo now just reports one item as an error in red:

Class: System
This Device Has a Problem: Code=22 (0x16)
This device is disabled.
DeviceDesc: IRQ Holder for PCI Steering
Registry Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\enum\PCI\IRQHOLDER\6A
Hardware Resource Section
Inst1 resources:
Alloc resources:
None
Extra Registry information Section
Driver Information section
Driver: System\0021
DriverDate: 06/08/2000

This aft, i was also looking at the DirectX diagnosis program. When I tried
the sound/music/tests ...it said:

Failure at step 3 (DirectSoundCreate): HRESULT = 0x8878000a (The request
failed because DirectSound resources, such as the priority level, were
already in use by another caller.)

Also, I do have a TV/video card installed. Sorry, I should have thought of
trying that before but i rarely use it. When I switched this on this aft, I
got loud background hissing sound. The arial is not connected at present so
I wouldnt get any channels but it seemed like this would have worked. This
is the only time I have had even the slightest sound.

I only guessing but are u going to tell me to remove that card from the PC??
Has it "kind of" taken over the sound card?

Thanks for all ur time on this, I am very grateful. I wont do anything until
I hear from you, if u have the time to reply.

Kind Regards

Nigel

I don't think the TV card has taken over the sound - but it's likely that
there's a conflict.
Try uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers for it (remove them in Safe
Mode, and reboot to Normal Mode)

BTW - is the sound an on-board chip, or a PCI card??

If on-board, have you perhaps disabled it in the BIOS??

Noel
Vie uninstalled and reinstalled the TV Card as u said. Still the same
problem.
Same error reported using hwinfo.
The sound is on-board and its definitely enabled in the BIOS.

Thanks again

Nigel
