Default Networking a Windows Me PC and Vista laptop

I am trying to set up a network with a PC running Windows Me and a laptop
running Vista. These are connected via a Netger router.

Is this possible to do and if so how can it be achieved?

Try enabling NTLM 2 and if that doesn't help then drop Vista back to using
NTLM.

As posted by Gloria Boyer from Microsoft:

Here's some info that might be helpful, although it sounds like your
problem
is in the other direction, Bill. However, I'm just putting this out there
in
case.

Cannot Authenticate to a Shared Folder from a Windows Vista-based Computer
If you cannot authenticate when accessing a shared folder from a Windows
Vista-based computer on a computer running a version of Windows prior to
Windows XP (such as Windows 98 and Windows 95), a computer running an
operating system other than Microsoft Windows, or to a network device, the
cause might be a mismatch in the configured support for NTLM 2, an
authentication protocol that is used for file and printer sharing
connections. By default, Windows Vista is configured to use NTLM 2.

To address this issue, you can do one of the following:

a.. Enable NTLM 2 support on the computer or device to which the Windows
Vista-based computer is attempting to connect. For computers running
versions of Windows prior to Windows XP, see How to enable NTLM 2
authentication (URL:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/239869). For computers
running operating systems other than Windows, see the operating system's
product documentation for information about how to enable NTLM 2 support.
For network devices, see the device's product documentation or Web site
for
information about how to enable NTLM 2 support or download a firmware
update
that supports NTLM 2. This is the preferred solution.

a.. If you cannot update the computers running operating systems other
than Windows or your network devices to support NTLM 2, change the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Lsa\LMCompatibilityLevel
registry value on the computer running Windows Vista to 1. This solution
is
not recommended.

Microsoft doesn't support File and Printer Sharing between Vista and
Me. It wasn't part of Vista's design, coding, or testing.

In my testing, a computer running Vista can access shared folders
belonging to a computer running Me.

To the best of my knowledge, no one has been able to make it work
reliably the other way. I've seen the following problems when trying
to access Vista's shared folders from Me. I give a solution to #1
below:

1. Incompatible default network authentication protocols. Windows Me
uses LM and NTLM authentication. Vista uses NTLMv2 authentication.
This causes a prompt for the IPC$ password on Me when password
protected sharing is enabled on Vista. There is no valid response to
the IPC$ prompt.

2. Incomplete enumeration of shares. Me only sees some of Vista's
shared folders. The names of some shared folders are truncated,
making them inaccessible.

3. Instability. Accessing Vista's shared folders makes Me hang or
crash.

If you want to try accessing Vista's shared folders from Me, I
recommend taking these safety measures first: make a restore point on
Vista, and back up your important data on all computers.

Here's how to configure Vista to use LM and NTLM authentication to
allow access from Me when password protected sharing is enabled. I'd
like to thank my fellow MVP Evan Pearce, who helped me understand and
test this:

1. Click the Start button, type "regedit" in the Start Search box, and
press Enter.

2. Click "Continue" in the User Account Control prompt.

3. Open this registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Lsa

4. If they don't already exist, create DWORD values named
LmCompatibilityLevel and NoLmHash.

5. Set LmCompatibilityLevel to 1.

6. Set NoLmHash to 0.

7. Restart the Vista computer.

8. Go to Control Panel User Accounts, click "Change your password",
enter your current password in the boxes for "Current password", "New
password", and "Confirm new password", and click "Change password".
