Start button sticks (lower feft corner)
Sometimes when I hit the start button it does nothing.
This happens usually when I'm online. When it first started doing it, I would just shut down and restart. I found later that if I just wait a minute, it will finally come up. Thanks, nCt |

Read and follow all the procedures on this page:

In other words:
A) you have followed all the maintenance procedures on that web page, rebooted, and there is no change in the behaviour? Or, B) you have read the page and don't see anything that you think applies? -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP W95/98 Systems http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm wrote in message ... Can't help but reply here.
I do not have all the letters after my name but i do have experience. Commands, such as the Start button (surprise! it sends a command) are stored in the command buffer. Usually this enters and exits so fast as to seem instantaneous but it isn't. If you have a badly performing program, essentially in a "wait" state, the commands, which are processed FIFO will stack up and wait for the "waiting command" to execute. Once that waiting (or intricate) command executes -- and it often is an online command-- the buffer will empty, giving you an apparent delayed reaction. This is most likely what is happening. Also, there are about another zillion reasons this could be happening. I don't have a lot of letters after my name either, but I do have experience also.
So, shall I take your reply as "B"? Performing maintenance procedures eliminates some possible causes, but if you don't want to go through the procedures, that's up to you. The problem may be due to some other background app (or malware) interfering. Have you looked at your startup programs? Have you run Hijack This and checked for possible malware, especially considering this seems to occur when you are online? Clean up your startup group: http://www.westelcom.com/users/rogersr/clean.htm Startup Programs Loading: http://aumha.org/a/loads.htm Hijack This: http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads31.html A tutorial for using Hijack This is located he http://tomcoyote.com/hjt/ and an in-depth tutorial is he http://aumha.org/a/hjttutor.htm Good luck. -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP W95/98 Systems http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "computer user" wrote in message ... Actually, my reply was to anonymous -- I was just too lazy to go back to that post. In my case the reply is 'A'. Performing maintenance procedures eliminates some possible causes, but if you don't want to go through the procedures, that's up to you. Of course. Reminds me of the lady I heard of some years ago whose hard disk was over half filled with broken chains. (That'll take you back a few years) The problem may be due to some other background app (or malware) interfering. Have you looked at your startup programs? Have you run Hijack This and checked for possible malware, especially considering this seems to occur when you are online? Yes i have. Several weeks ago I had problems with repeated "Possible Browser Hijack Attempt"s that Ad-Aware caught. Kept changing my home page to MSN.COM. Anyway, I downloaded "Browser Hijack Blaster" (freeware) and that took care of the browser hijack attempts problem. BHB took care of it and stopped it whereas AdAware just told me about it. Still being unsure whether some malware was using my OE to send spam, i downloaded "Taskinfo2003" which gives me more information than I need. :-) But.......it shows all running processes and CPU usage. That has soothed my mind. Clean up your startup group: http://www.westelcom.com/users/rogersr/clean.htm Already done. Startup Programs Loading: http://aumha.org/a/loads.htm Already done. Hijack This: http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads31.html They want money!!!!! A tutorial for using Hijack This is located he http://tomcoyote.com/hjt/ and an in-depth tutorial is he http://aumha.org/a/hjttutor.htm Good luck. I keep an eye on what starts with the computer. I can identify all running processes in Taskmon but it is not as in depth as I would like. Taskinfo2003(shareware) is so in depth I have no idea why someone needs any more -- it has a dynamic display and itself uses from .1% to 1.5% of my 1.6G CPU as well as a time averaged display which is currently showing .7% for itself. The time averaged CPU idle is showing 95% with 24 processes currently running. The dynamic usage will spike when i send this message. CU |

....and I mistakenly thought you were the original poster. I see now that you are
not. People using the web interface instead of a real newreader, and posting as "anonymous", really make it confusing trying to follow threads here. I see from your headers that you are using a newsreader (Forte Agent), and so are not the original poster. Sorry for the confusion. :-) Hijack This: http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads31.html They want money!!!!! Where do you see anything about them wanting money?? I probably saw "license" and ran. ;-) Another possibility is the "Free Download" statement which is often used for shareware. CU |

Original poster here. I am new to these posts, and I agree about following
these threads. Sorry. I have noticed that the start button sticks mostly when I exit yahoo mail and go directly to the start button. I will try the hijack this link when I get time Thanks "glee" wrote: ....and I mistakenly thought you were the original poster. I see now that you are not.
