Default Can NOt Drag Icons after a short time of use.

Hi Justin,

You are right--we have no idea as to your qualifications and therefore we
give you and anyone else who provides us limited info more information than
you might need or possibly things to try that you feel are beneath your
experience level. When you don't want to receive these types of
recommendations, clearly **specify** what you have tried and what the
**results** were. Your comments about Tweak UI lead me to believe that you
were a newbie since you didn't appear to understand how Tweak UI works. We
also find that most newbies use the newsgroups internet interface as you did
instead of employing a newsreader such as OE or Agent.

As far as Bert's recommendation about hardware, there is no way to know
exactly how failing ram (for example) is going to act. It could be that the
icon problem occurs without any of the other severe problems you'd normally
expect. We don't know if hardware is the culprit and neither do you unless
you actually troubleshoot.

You would not be the first person who thought he/she knew what they were
doing when in fact they were doing a procedure wrong. For example, I told
you to try a clean boot technique and you blew me off saying that it could
not be done. So, I explained in detail how to do it in your circumstance
and there was no further communication from you--I don't know if you blew it
off again or tried it and did not get any positive results. I am still
leaning towards something running in the background because of the delay
after the boot until the onset of the icon problem.

In your response to Glen you stated that you already had tried Spyware
removal; however, you did not say which programs you had tried and I did not
recommend Hijack This so Glen's recommendation was a good one. His comments
about getting updates are also on target as may people run spyware and anti
virus programs without getting the signature updates. If you tried all the
programs I mentioned in my first post and Hijack This and made sure you had
the most recent updates, you should have so stated so that we did not waste
OUR time with useless recommendations that wasted YOUR time.

Finally, you are probably right about no one else having this problem. The
symptoms are weird enough that I should remember running across it in the
seven years I have monitored the W98 newsgroups if it had been reported.
When no firm solution exits, the best we can do is use our experience to
provide you things to try that might fix the problem. If this is not good
enough for you, perhaps you should look elsewhere--MS will try to help you
for $35. However, what I would really prefer is that you cool down and work
with us in trying to track down the solution. I for one would like to know
what the culprit is.

Your assuming that i am a total inexperinced person on a
computer... that i am a complete NEWBIE.. and all i am
getting is advice that you might give to someone that has
no clue..... it is a wonder i wasnt adviced to get a whole
new computer.. or maybe switch to a different desk lamp!

Well as I told you in my previous post to your LINKS to
Hijackthis...aprrently you did not read my posts closely..
and like to your use your little copy and paste
templates of support...

SO let me tell you AGAIN.. i tried that program.. ok?!?!
do you understand me now?!?!.. i have tried it.. your not
talking to a newbie... and it did NOT fix my problem. The
problem is NOT hardware either... you dont think i know
how to make diagnistic tests on on my own system?!?
AGAIN i am NOT a newbie.

This is JUST a problem i FOUND odd.. that i ran across
and i thought i would come here to see if anyone ELSE had
the same problem...and all i get was newbie advice.. when
in turn you all have NO CLUE either what is the fix..
cause you never had the problem before..

if you never had the problem before.. then you should not
be giving advice on how to fix it... as like i am not a
mechanic you dont see me telling you how to fix your
car!!

sorry i came here.. i thought this place was more sensible
than that.. but heck.. i am wrong.. Your the SO called
EXPERTS... i forgot... i am just a newbie!

You might find help would be easier to get if you changed your attitude. We have no
idea whether you are a newbie or not. The fact is, it matters not. I have solved
problems for MCSE's here, because they were not familiar with a particular aspect of
something that I was familiar with. Your level of experience, or what you consider
your level, does not bear on the matter.

I have re-read your posts in this thread (all of them) and nowhere did you ever
state that you used or even heard of Hijack This. I suggest you re-read your own
posts and you will see. Did you post your log file to any forums? I for one would
be interested in what appeared in it during the time the problem is occurring.

Bert suggested looking into some hardware problems and

you said it wasn't a hardware
problem, giving no indication that you have checked for

overheating, dirt-clogging,
or tested the RAM. The fact that it does not freeze doe

*not* preclude hardware
problems.

In your reply to Ron malware, you state only that

you "have done a spyware
check". I have read that same statement countless times,

and there was still
enormous amounts of malware on the machine in question.

You did not indicate in any
way exactly how you did your spyware check, using what

applications, and whether
they were updated prior to testing.

I gave you links to use Hijack This in order to more

completely check for malware.
Nowhere do you mention having followed that procedure,

nor what the replies were
from the forum where you posted the logs. Checking for

malware without using Hijack
This and having the log looked at by experts, is *not*

doing a complete check.

I was not at all being sarcastic, and it is too bad you

chose to take it that way.
Every one of your replies has been "no, that's not it"

but you give little or no
feedback into exactly what you tried and what the results

were.....hence my
statement. You brushed off Bert's suggestions without

any indication that you
looked into the hardware angle.

I suggest you do a Google search on failure to drag

icons, if you do not like the
replies you are getting here. The problem has been

encountered before in
variations. We are trying to help you and to eliminate

possibilities. We have no
idea what you have tried or done already, unless you give

details and your results.

What hardware testing or observation have you actually

done, exactly?
What methods and apps did you use to check for malware?
Have you run Hijack this and posted the log to a spyware

forum?

hello... i dont understand why you are sayign i am not
looking into the suggestions people gave? I wouldnt be
on here asking for help if i havent already tried them!
This has been an on going thing for long time.. and I am
getting ideas that lord knows i already tried many
times. So there is no need using sarcasinm against me
as i am only here asking if anyone else has had the same
problem and what they did to fix it .. but i guess i was
wrong.

Second.. if you read my other post.. I ALREADY tried
spyware removal... that was one of the first things i

have
done.. so your giving me the same advice other have

said
also and i reposted back saying i tried that

already...
so thank you anyways!!

I guess I cant get any help here.. cause no one else

has
ever had the problem!

Thank you everyone anyways!

JB

Since you won't look into any of the suggestions people
are giving you,
download, unzip, and run Hijack This from one of these
locations:
http://computercops.biz/downloads-cat-14.html
http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads31.html

http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads...HijackThis.exe

Unzip to a folder *other than* your Desktop or the Temp
folder.
When the problem you are describing occurs, double-

click
HijackThis.exe, and hit
"Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will
change into a "Save Log"
button.
Press that, save the log somewhere you can find it
(Desktop, My Documents, or
similar).
Most of what it lists will be harmless or even

required,
so do NOT fix anything yet.

Copy the log files and paste them into a new post at:
http://forum.aumha.org/viewforum.php?f=30

In your post, please state your problem clearly and

what
you've done so far to fix
it.

The folks there will tell you what, if anything, to
remove.

See the "housekeeping" they ask you to complete before
you post your log:

I am sorry but thats not the problem as i do not

freeze
up...or lock up. It is not a hardware problem becuase
everything works fine. the only thing is that the

icons
and favourites can not be dragged thats all.. that

has
nothing to do with my hardware...cause then if that

was
the case i would experience more severe problems..

-----Original Message-----
Hi Justin,

Here are some possible causes for system

Freeze/Lockups
Overheating do to: Dirty of faulty cooling fans.

Check
the
fan(s) to make sure they are clean and operating.
Faulty or mis-matched memory modules (RAM).
Test the RAM using MemTest.
Memtest86 - Memory Diagnostic Page:
http://www.memtest86.com/#download1
Download link for - Pre-Compiled Memtest86 v3.1
installable from Windows and
DOS:
http://www.memtest86.com/memt31.zip

Computer virus. Perform a virus scan with up to date
virus software

Try switching RAM sticks if there is more than one
Use one stick, then another. Only one at a time, of
course.
If both sticks work alone but will not work when
combined, that almost
certainly indicates an incompatibility between the

two
sticks.
If one stick works but the other does not, then that
would indicate the one
that doesn't work is either faulty, will not get

along
with the other stick,
or is not the correct type for your system.

Other less common causes:
A faulty power supply.
A Faulty or un-grounded household outlet.
Athlon based computer with less than a 300W power
supply
Outdated video drive. Download the latest driver

from
the
manufactures web sit, and install it as per
manufactures
instructions
Over clocking of the CPU
Incorrect voltage setting on the motherboard
Improperly configured BIOS setting
Loose power connectors or cables

Hey Ron!.. thanx for the attmpt.. but thats not he
problem.. i already have done the spyware check

and
everything.. i don even have to b on the net to
have it
lock up the icons on me.....

Also rebooting seems to FIX the problem... so

doing
a
clean boot will not tell me what is causing the
problems... the problems seems like it is cause

my
by
running normal programs or what not. As i say

when
i
reboot ... the computer is fine.. and i can move
icons..
favourites.. etc etc.. .. then i start runnign
programs...
seems ok so far.. then after like about hour or

so
the
icon /favourite draggin problems comes back!

then i have to reboot!.. I know it is an odd
problem..
i think it ay have something to do with that
TWEAKUI..
i
know i took it off but i seems that maybe that set
soemthing!

Still clueless

-----Original Message-----
That is an unusual symptom so just guessing, I
suspect
something running in
the background may be causing the problem.

1. Spyware/scumware/adware are causing numerous
system
problems. I
recommend you download and use the following
programs
and
consider removing
everything these programs identify. Be aware

that
there
are frequent
updates to these programs and you need to check

for
them
before every use.

AdAwa

CWShredder:

Tha AUTOARRANGE is UNCHECKED.. as i said i

have
