Default Problem Backing Up and/or Copying Files

Have purchased a new computer w/ Windows XP 2002. Old computer is the
problem. Has Windows 98 and old version of Microsoft Money. Trying to
backup and/or copying to cd in order to install our info on the new computer.
No matter which route I try to go, it tells me I don't have authorization tp
do so. Is there some way around this, or do I need to take the floppy disc
some where and have them do it for me. There is no floppy on the new one and
I really don't want one.
Appreciate any advice I can get and keep in mind I am an average joe with no
technical training.
Thanks.

Remove the devices (CDRom drive, etc.) from the secondary IDE cable on the
new PC. Remove the hard drive from the old machine. No need to mount the
drive in the new machine--just sit the drive on its end. Connect the ribbon
cable and a power cable to the hard drive. Use Explorer on the new machine
to transfer your files.
