Need help with help!
Hi all, I'm having a problem with my help files. Whenever I click on display
the right window pane stays blank. I tried tshoot.inf and install with the Win98SE CD but still blank. I'm sure this is a question most of you find really simple but I'm lost and really need your help. I really depend on my help files. I especially use my troubleshooters. I feel lost without them. Thanks all in advance for all your advice. Ani |

There are 2 separate critical updates that caused the TShoot Wizards to stop working.
For more info and ways to use the wizards, see: http://mvps.org/PracticallyNerded/Wi...98_Tshootr.htm 1st occurrence: If you do not already have "Show All Files" checked in folder options, you need to do that first. To show all files, open My Computer, click on View Folder Options View tab. Under the heading Hidden Files place a check next to Show All Files, Apply/Ok out. Now find the Tshoot.inf file which should be in c:\windows\inf, right click on it and select Install from the popup list. Have your Win cd on hand. Second occurrence, only has workarounds to use the Tshoot Wizards: This is because the latest critical update (Q824145) places a kill bit on the ActiveX control tshoot.ocx. What is not recommended is removing the update or the kill bit altogether as this will open up the vulnerabilities the update fixes, which is more than killing tshoot.ocx. MS-MVP George (Bindar Dundat) has created a fix that will open the tshooter and remove the kill bit. Once you close the tshooter it replaces the kill bit. ----------------- or here in case the first link is down: http://home.comcast.net/~bascon58/98Help.htm -- Brian A. I'm so glad to here that I'm not alone. I'm experiencing
the exact same problem. I too, depend on my help files often, especially the troubleshooters. I also have already performed the steps that Brian A. suggested. Are there any other suggestions? Your Help will be greatly appreciated. -----Original Message----- Thank u but I tried that already....without results. Ani "Brian A." GoneFishn@aFarAwayLake wrote in message ... Which have you tried? The first, installing the .inf again will only work for the
first issue. The second, which is a workaround for the second update installed, does work when implemented correctly. You must run the TSW from the app in the start menu, not the help files. Did you try this method or read the .txt doc that is with it for instructions on how to use it? If you wish, go to microsoft.public.win98.general_discussion and do a find on troubleshoot. I believe you will find another workaround or 2. Keep in mind that the activeX was removed due to a vulnerability and if replaced opens back up the vulnerability. -- Brian A.
