Default Win98 Media player .wmv files load too slowly

I hope this is the right group to post this to.

Does anyone know why the .WMV files load so slowly in media player ( win98
and WMP 7.1)? It takes about 1 minute to load and start playing, could
it be some codec I need? I use irfanview to run mpg and other files and
they load and run in about 1 second. Thanks.

Steve,

I doubt it's codecs. I'd check running processes against available system
resources first.

Just after rebooting I have 95% free resources and I still get very slow
load times for any files being run under the media player. It's says
"opening media..." for about 30 -60 seconds. How long does it take you(
anyone) to open WMV files?? Just curious. ( Irfanview opens my mpeg files
immediately). Do you think slow load times is inherent in WMP? Any replies
would be helpful. Thanks all.

Steve,

WMP starts slower than a number of comprable applications, more so when you
have an updated version of WMP on an older system because the update is
often geared towards faster PCs. As for me, personally, on this computer it
took about two seconds to load and begin playing a WMV file but this is WMP
v10, XP, and has a lot of resources available to it. I don't think I recall
it ever taking 30 seconds to a minute to open though. I tried on an older 98
system as I'm typing this and it took a while, that one is just a P3, but
not that long. It took, in my estimate, about 10 seconds or so to load. I
did manage to make it take quite a while to open... Are you trying to open a
single WMV file or a whole bunch of them at once? If I highlight a bunch it
gets pretty mad at me.

Galen,

I only try to open one at a time. I would never attempt opening up multiple
files since I know that would be a strain on the PC. I have 512k ram with a
1Ghz AMD chip, but when I 1st got this PC, I didn't have this problem. Then
again, I had updated my WMP to 7.1..... Thanks for any advise you gave or
can still give.

Steve,

Well... *thinks* That's a fine box for 98 to be honest and I'm going to say
that your computer's performance is not the issue. Is your version of WMP
the newest you can use on 98? I don't actually know as I never bother
updating 98 that far, I only get critical updates and use 98 solely for test
purposes or to help people out in the groups. I never use 98 as my default
OS any more. I do use ME often but I am often using XP Pro.

So, this being said... If you simply can't get the performance you want from
WMP and you have the absolutely latest player and earlier players also
weren't fast enough for you then there's this link which I think you'll find
handy:

http://www.snapfiles.com/freeware/gm...iaplayers.html

I'm familiar with JetAudio as I actually own their full version. I've never
used their free version but I am pretty sure that it won't be full of ads
nor will it spy on you. I've been using their software for... Wow... For a
long time actually. Basically what I'm saying is that if WMP isn't
performing to your expectations and your box is good enough (which it
certainly is, did you know you could EASILY run XP on that if you wanted?)
then you can also consider alternate solutions.
