Problem with something taking over IE--
While surfing I answered yes to a ms looking message and I
am in the crud on anything but firefox on the internet. If I try to go on line with IE I get three pop-ups and an error message inside IE itself. Q: Is there a way to sort this out without a big time envolvement that works? I have Norton SW 2002 and it's not solving the problem. My system is: ASUSA7N8X-X, AMD XP 2600, 80GB, 512 DDR, running Me, personal/business use. I'm 58 and just learning. Thanx-- Chuck |

Thanx-- Chuck First eliminate any scumware. CAUTION!!!!! Before you try to remove spyware using any of these programs , download a copy of LSPFIX from any of the following sites: http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html (if your OS is Win2k or XP) The process of removing certain malware may kill your internet connection. If this should occur, this program, LSPFIX, will enable you to regain your connection. See Dealing with Unwanted Malware, Parasites, Toolbars and Search Engines http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other won't. Also, each needs to be updated with the program's update function before every use, even when just downloaded. There's also a lot more to do than just those two programs. Do not send email http://www.fjsmjs.com Protect your PC http://www.microsoft.com/security/protect/ . Frank: Thank you for the response. I have several questions, I hope you don't mind? What is "scumeware" and how would I recognize it. Is there a way to identify it as distinguished from correct programing? Would it be better to fdisk this mother and reenter my software and mark a restoration point so that in the future and now there is not so much time wasted? I feel there is too much of an mismatch and I won't get a clean job from the beginning and in the future. Also, I wished there was a way to find periphery, duplicate and obsolete files. I do not want to necessarily limit the input or places I can go. It is just as obnoxious, to me, to have all these warnings come up as it is pop-up windows. It seems that I have a trade-off with exposure vs. limitations Slowing me down. So... is there a way to personally or via some ms or market software or textbook that might help me quickly be better equiped to deal with this problem or is that the purpose of "system restore"? Thanx--Chuck |

Do not send email http://www.fjsmjs.com Protect your PC http://www.microsoft.com/security/protect/ . Frank: I have learned a lot, but still feel overwhelmed. I learned: Filters on medium; I have protection devices available; and I am not sure from that point forward. I want to know more... so the only way I know to get this project undercontroll is to ask questions. Are you the person to ask? Would I insult you by asking basic question like:my ie does not function properly...It comes on with popups and a error message in the body of ie, not as a sml. info. window. I can open ie in Firefox but ie has a tool bar named "Intelligent Explorer" in it and it would seem compromised. Fudge! This leads to another question: I tryed to locate the program "intl. exp." but didnot even come close-- I used Norton cleansweep and browsed file after file and might have found it, but...since I can't tell where all it's parts are and what they connect to surgery seems futile, and a waste of time. My main thought now is to stop the bleeding and use your optimum "preventitive" stuff, put up with warning signs (until I learn how to put stuff in "trusted" categories) and wipe this compromised program set out and establish a start period that if and when all else fails I can refresh to and be back in bubububussssinessssss!!!!! Sorry to dump on you, but if you are not the person to bottle feed neophyte's, please direct me to one of your departments/people, colleague's |
