Registry/Configuration Problem
I'm helping my neighbor with this problem: The screen goes
to an empty gray screen after a registry/configuration error message that says to run SCANREG to correct the registry error. Is there anything I can do from this empty screen? I would appreciate any help simce I'm really a novice trying to learn how to work on computers. Thnak you!! |

To do this turn the computer on and press the Ctrl key just as soon as the first information of any kind shows on the screen. Hold it down until the Windows Startup Menu appears and choose Safe Mode from the menu. If it starts up into Safe Mode then use Start - Run and enter SCANREG /RESTORE in the dialog box. Choose the most recent registry backup that is prior to the onset of problem. If the computer will not boot into Safe Mode then boot it with a WindowsMe Startup Disk. You can download one from www.bootdisk.com if you do not already have one. When the computer stops at the A:\ prompt enter the following command: SCANREG /RESTORE and choose the most recent registry backup that is prior to the onset of problem. Hello Ron,
I tried with Safe Mode but the same result so I'm going to download from bootdisk and continue trying. I really appreciate this help. This is all new territory for me and I don't want to ruin my neighbor's computer any further than it is already. I'll let you know about my progress. Thank you very much, Radford Ferland -----Original Message----- "Radford Ferland" wrote: I'm helping my neighbor with this problem: The screen goes to an empty gray screen after a registry/configuration error message that says to run SCANREG to correct the registry error. Thank you Ron & Noel for responding to my postings. I have learned so much
these past few days working on this problem. The help that I have received from you both have helped tremendously. The dll problem definitely had something to do with spyware. I eventually reinstalled ME using a boot disk with the CD support option. Thnak again! I'll look forward to your future postings. If you reinstalled ME over itself from the CD, then you'll have to reinstall
ALL the Windows Updates - and probably remove/reinstall IE6!! Download, install, and run Belarc Advisor (www.belarc.com) to see what it has to say about the state of your hotfixes. -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2005, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's "Radford Ferland" wrote in message ...
