Word shuts down Windows
I have a computer running Windows 98. It also has Office
97 Pro. Frequently, when you open a Word document and type in any character, the computer shuts down and restarts (no error mssages or warning, screen just goes black.) Of course it then runs a scan disk because of improper shut down. Any suggestions? This is not a new load. The machine has been loaded with this OS and application for quite some time and always run with no problems. I did try to reload Windows and Office, but it made no difference. It still happens. Thanks |

Did you completely uninstall Office and then reinstall? =
Uninstalling/reinstalling Office will not remove your documents/files = you created, when reinstalled they should automatically reassociate with = the Office app they were created with. Not sure if this will help, but = the Normal.dot has been known to cause issues, do a search for it and = delete it. Last but not least, check with one of the Office NG's. --=20 Brian A. Word shuts down Windows
I don't know, really. Are you saying this only happens when Office 97 is
involved, you are typing into an Office document? (1) I guess this is worth a quick try... ..........Quote....................... A common cause for WORD freezing is a corrupted NORMAL.DOT file. Search for this file and rename it, then re-start WORD. -- Jeff Richards MS MVP (DTS) .........End of quote.............. Of course, he was talking about you. Still... (a) You may not see it, unless "START button, Settings, Folder Options, View tab" is bolted "Show all files"; may as well uncheck "Hide file extensions..." too. (b) "START button, Find, F/F, Normal.dot". (c) R-Clk it, & delete or rename it. (2) Try the Microsoft Knowledge Base http://search.support.microsoft.com/...SD=GN&LN=EN-US MSKB Select Office 97 from the product dropdown menu. (3) Have you tried an Office Newsgroup...?... news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsof...c.office.setup -- Thanks or Good Luck, There may be humor in this post, and, Naturally, you will not sue, should things get worse after this, PCR "jcollins" wrote in message ... | I have a computer running Windows 98. Word shuts down Windows
I had a problem with Word freezing (see thread Word 2000 freeze 7/10/04).
The solution below seems to have relieved the issue. I renamed the normal.dot file and word now opens fine. "Brian A." GoneFishn@aFarAwayLake wrote in message ... Fine and dandy. IIRC a new one is created that is not corrupted, if =
this is true you can delete the renamed one once your sure the problem = no longer exists. --=20 Brian A. Jack of all trades, Master of none. To who? Yourself or the OP? I believe what he meant by "The solution =

I think he meant YOURS, because it is "below" inside his response.
By the way, I didn't see yours when I posted mine. (I'm no copycat!) I suppose you responded offline. When you connected, it showed up earlier than mine, because the timestamp is as/of when it was "Sent" to the Outbox whether on/off-line. -- Thanks or Good Luck, There may be humor in this post, and, Naturally, you will not sue, should things get worse after this, PCR "Brian A." Nah! I mentioned Delete and you mentioned Rename. Either way the OP has =
