Windows 98 SE freezes after adding more RAM
Hi,
I have an IBM Aptiva 2178-840 with 128 RAM, now I tried to add more ram and bought another 128 MB. The card installs without a problem and the system seems to work fine, but just before the icons are placed on the desktop in windows the system freezes and it is impossible to do an Alt, Ctrl, Del. I have tried to restart the system in safe mode and that works well, it opens all the way and tells me that I now have 256 MB RAM, but I don't know where to go from here to have it work in regular mode as well? I did a "clean up" on the computer last night, and checked for AD-ware earlier today, so I don't think that is a problem. Aina --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Try removing the new ram and see if the boot problem continues. If not,
change the slots and install the new ram where the old one was and the old one in the empty slot. Sometimes ram modules will not match and problems ensue; however, I don't recall hearing of that happening but not when in safe mode. -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP for W98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo "Aina Nilsen" wrote in message ... Version: 6.0.680 / Virus Database: 442 - Release Date: 09.05.04 .Since the machine recognizes the total amount of Ram, it sounds like they are imcompatible. I'm not sure what type of Ram that is in the Aptiva, so my first comment is that you may not have matched the new Ram with the same type as the existing, i.e. DDR, SDR, EDO with or without error correction, my second question is did you buy Ram specific for IBM? Dell, IBM, Compaq usually "tweek" their ram so quite often other types of Ram do not work well in these machines. Hope this helps you solve your problem. |

It should be the same type of Ram, but it isn't IBM spesific, so I may have a problem with that. I'm just surprised that it seems to work half way, since it seems to be working in safe mode. I assumed that if I needed IBM spesific Ram it would not work at all? Aina, who will never buy an IBM or other brand name PC again. My even older "bits and pieces" clone never gave me this kind of trouble. --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). Did you try the new ram only? If it works OK, then the problem is seemingly
that the old and new ram do not match. What I cannot explain is why the PC boots in safe mode--it makes no sense to me but maybe I am overlooking something. If nobody offers an explanation here, I suggest you contact the maker of the new ram and ask for their help. -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP for W98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo "Aina Nilsen" wrote in message ... I didn't think of trying that one alone, I will try just to see if the
match is the problem. I bought the ram at a store that sells computer parts with all kind of other stuff, so I doubt they can help me. But it wasn't too much money, so if I can't make it work it has to be written off as a learning experience. As I said before, I think I will avoid brand name computers in the future, they seem more expensive to upgrade than the clones. regards Aina "Ron Badour" skrev i melding ...
