Default windows update problems

hello to all. this is my first post, so please bare with me. here goes: my
system became infected with numerous viruses and caused system restore to be
eliminated from my computer (it no longer works nor can i find it on the
system tools access), also numerous IE crashes, and utimately windows
crashed. it stated i must reinstall windows upon start up, but could not
find the recovery disk. i left the computer for about 7 months and then
found the sytemax recovery cd and reloaded windows. i purchased mcafee and
removed all viruses, downloaded lava soft adware se, and most recently the
belarc advisor. i have been trying to update the entire computer, but i
cannot get the internet explorer 6 service pack 1 to install. i can download
all the components but then the message states that unable to install please
close and retry. i have tried but with no luck. can anyone help me with this

Rudy,

For the "unable to install all components" issue with IE6SP1 in WinME, =
try this:

Go to My Computer - Tools - Folder Options - View:
- Select "Show hidden files and folders", click Apply - OK

Create a folder named "Old uninstall".

Go to folder C:/Program Files/Internet Explorer/Uninstall Information.

Now Edit - Select All - Cut all files.

Open "Old uninstall" folder and paste the files.

You will now be able to install all the troublesome components.

If everything works as expected, you can delete the "Old Uninstall" =
folder
and the files you moved.

Good luck,

Zee

thanks a lot!! that worked but when i load internet pages, it says done but
with errors on the page. i run the belarc advisor and it shows that a
hotfix, UPDQ823559, must be reinstalled. i click on the details and it ends
up referring me to windows update where that is not offered for an update.
any suggestions?? thanks again.

Download the patch you require from the Windows Update Catalogue
(http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...en/default.asp). The
Windows Update site won't offer you the patch again if you have already
installed it and then subsequently reinstalled Win Me over itself.

Glad it worked.

Regarding your other question, you already got the answer from one, if not
the, best around.

Cheers,

Zee
