Explorer's Folder View:

This particular problem is often the result of a damaged IE (usually IE6)
install or update, usually caused by doing so with either Norton or McAfee
AV running at the time. Yes I do realise you are talking about Windows
Explorer rather than Internet Explorer but the two are linked. May I
suggest that you try repairing IE. Do this using Control Panel |
Add/Remove Programs and highlight Microsoft Internet Explorer, click
Add/Remove and then on the next screen select "Repair Internet Explorer"
and then OK.

If you don't have an entry for Microsoft Internet Explorer but rather it
reads something like Internet Explorer Q?????? don't worry. This is
because you have installed a cumulative update for Internet Explorer. You
will need to uninstall the update, then go back into Add/Remove Programs,
look again for Microsoft Internet Explorer, repair it and then reinstall
the latest cumulative update.

If this doesn't work or you have no entry for Internet Explorer in
Add/Remove Programs please post back and someone will hopefully post
further details on how to repair Explorer.

Mike
Does this solves the CFJ's problem?
Because that involves the first removing nearly all updates and then
reinstalling the updates.

Windows Explorer folder pane is blank - grayed out

When you open Windows Explorer, you may notice that the folder pane in the
left side is completely grayed out. This happens if the registry key for
Explorer Band is missing. To resolve the problem, type the following command
in the RUN box:

REGSVR32 /i SHDOCVW
(Note that the /i parameter is mandatory)

More Information: The following registry key is responsible to view the
explorer pane (left pane). The problem indicated above occurs, if this key
is missing:

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{EFA24E64-B078-11d0-89E4-00C04FC9E26E}]

Not that I am aware of but is certainly worth a try.

The method I suggest of repairing IE would require the removal of probably
just one patch, that is the most recent critical update for IE. The user
may have applied ten such critical updates but only the most recent will
still be present and after repairing IE should be the only one requiring
reinstallation.

AAH,

I'll certainly suggest in future that those having this problem try the
suggestion you posted before moving on to repairing IE.

Cheers,

Mike M
