Default Finding bookmarks files

I was using MSN browser when my computer had to be repaired. I had all my files saved and then installed on a clean machine under Old System.

I want to know where in the MSN folder I can find the bookmark files. For some reason I cannot load MSN as my browser and therefore I cannot get into those bookmarks.

Even if I reload MSN won't it be a new load and my bookmarks will be gone?

They are named favorites.xml.
Do a search for that., usually under local settings.
They are stored on-line so when you reinstall, they should be there.

Mae, I was not able to reload MSN under my old sign in name. I had to open a new account so would I be able to access the bookmarks stored online?

No, as they are under the other ID-email name.
Why did you have to get a new one?
Set up another user under your account using the old one.
But that would not be accessible by your new one.
Were you able to find the file in your "old system" copy?

Default Finding bookmarks files

HI Mae, I could not find the favorites.xml that held the old bookmarks. The one that comes up is the new ones from IE.

I have opened a new account with MSN and I log in under guest and "voila" there I am!!! I was so happy to see those bookmarks~~~felt like coming home after a long boring vacation, LOL

I have 1 final question, I promise:-) Now that I have the bookmarks how can I print off the list and have it showing the complete url to each one? That way if I should lose them again I'll have a copy. I'll even burn a cd of them this time!

Default Finding bookmarks files

You will have to find the favorites.xml for that ID.
See if this helps:
You will need to view the hidden files on your computer.=20
To view hidden files on your computer
Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Explore.=20
In Windows Explorer, on the Tools menu, click Folder Options.=20
Click the View tab.=20
Under Advanced Settings, select Show hidden files and folders.
Click Start, and then click Find Files or Folders.=20
In the Named box, enter localsettings.xml, and then in the Containing =
Text box, enter your e-mail address.=20
Ensure that your main hard disk drive is selected, select Include =
subfolders, and then click Find.=20
When the results are returned, select the first file in the list.=20
On the File menu, click Open Containing Folder. A new window should =
open, showing all files and sub-folders in this folder.=20
It is usually somewhere like this:
\Documents and Settings\username\Application
Data\MSN6\UserData\{xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxx}.
\Profiles\userid\Application Data\MSN6\UserData\{??}\favorites.xml
\Windows\Application Data\MSN6\UserData\{??}\favorites.xml

Now you can read it with Iexplorer or notepad but since it is a data =
file-is not formatted.
If you have the latest Word or dotnet you can use an editor for that.
If not, someone wrote an application to change the xml file into a =
bookmark.htm.
which you can import into internet explorer and print.
I will find it for you and post that later-but first locate the file.

Default Finding bookmarks files

My daughter just bought a new computer with XP and presumed she lost her =
favorites. She was so happy when she signed in to msn and all her =
favorites were there untouched so I know what you are talking about.
After you find your file:
1. go he
http://www.mainsoft.fr/freeware_en.htm
2. get this (free):
MSN Favorites Export Toolkit (msnfav.zip - 2k)
3. unzip to a folder (these are the files:
(msnfav.vbs and msnfav.xls)
4. Copy your favorites.xml file to the same folder.
5. Double-click msnfav.vbs.
6. The script should create a file named bookmark.htm.
7. To print:
Open bookmark.htm, select fileprint-and put a checkmark in "print =
table of links".
or use this:
BookMark Wizard-Moon: http://www.moonsoftware.com/
8. If you wish you can also select fileimport-export import into =
Internet Explorer then import it into your new msn identity.

If you have problems, you might need to update by getting this:
MSXML Parser 3.0 Service Pack 4 :
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=3D308480

Hereafter, when you add a favorite, also add it to a list in a doc or =
notepad so you will always have your own list. I use notepad on a floppy =
and take it with me when I travel.

Post back if any problems.

I'm taking baby steps here, LOL
I have found the file I need but when I click on your url link to the download it tells me that the page has moved and that zip file is not listed. It does have the MSXML Parser 3.0 listed but it looks like it it an update for the first zip file. I'm not sure if that is what I need~~~~~~~

ok. we are making progress.
I just tried the link to mainsoft-the zip is at the bottom.
Right click it and select "save target as" and it will download.
Only takes one second.
Then follow the rest of the instructions.
You only need to update msxml if you have a problem.
I can find another link for that if needed.
Having a terrible storm here -have to run.
Post back with your progress.

1 step forward, 3 steps back, LOL
I right clicked and selected save as target, then opened the file. There is no where on that page to click to download the zip file. It says if there are problems to click on the link below and download the MSXML 4.0 Service Pack. this does not seems right because it seems that the download is if you already have the toolkit.

Maybe I should give this up and just copy each one down the old fashioned way with pen and paper.

Hope the storm passes quickly for you!
