IE6 doesn't know to use network adaptor to access net
I have two computers in my home network. The host is an XP Pro system
(hardwired to router) and the client is a wireless 98SE laptop. I am trying to share my dial-up connection. The file sharing works fine. The client 98SE system is able to enable/disable the host XP dial-up connection via the Internet Gateway since I ran the XP disk on the 98SE system to setup the network. But, when I click on the IE icon on the 98SE system to browse the web, the age-old "Cannot find page, blah, blah, blah" page shows up. I'm confused because I can dial up the connection perfectly fine from the client 98SE system. When I click on "enable" on the client, the host computer dials up. But it's as if Internet Explorer doesn't know to use the wireless adaptor to access the web. Could it be that it's still trying to use the laptop's old modem to access it? Do I need to unistall the modem software on the client? How do I tell Internet Explorer to use the wireless adaptor to access the web? All of my firewalls are turned off so I know that's not it. |

Never ever use the XP network settings disk. (I mean this - from the bottom of my heart...) In your network properties under TCP/IP set the default gateway for DNS from 192.168.0.1, disable the DHCP in the router, have the XP machine handle DHCP. Best bet? Really? Get another phone line. The last time I disabled DHCP at the router level the thing decided I could no longer log into it and I ended up resetting it and, of course, losing all of my settings as it didn't have a backup function anywhere to be found. The above *might* work... ICS is a tricky little bugger. Sometimes you need to really toy with it and add the mshome.net to the default gateway under advanced - not sure how to do that in 9x any more. There's proxy software out there that might handle that sort of stuff but, really, ICS on dialup isn't really worth the work. You'll spend 50 hours playing with it and save a total of 30 minutes over your lifetime and suffer from slow download speeds due to it and intermittent disconnects for no reason that anyone other than an über geek can fathom. -- Galen - MS MVP - Windows (Shell/User & IE) http://dts-l.org/ "My life is spent in one long effort to escape from the commonplaces of existence." - Sherlock Holmes |

Err... Just saw how old this was and how much I've slacked in this group. My bad though I doubt you'll ever see it. Hopefully you've fixed the problem. g -- Galen - MS MVP - Windows (Shell/User & IE) http://dts-l.org/ "My life is spent in one long effort to escape from the commonplaces of existence." - Sherlock Holmes |

Galen,
I did get your reply, contrary to you thinking I wouldn't receive it. Thanks for your input. As of right now, I have it up and running. I tinkered with it over Thanksgiving and got it running. I had to adjust my TCP/IP settings in the 98SE computer as per a web posting I found from Steve Winograd (a common name I've seen in these discussion forums). It is now working fine. I thank you for your input though. M Ridzon |

He's exceptionally talented. g And yeah, it would have been in the TCP/IP settings and ALWAYS best done manually as opposed to allowing the network setup disk do anything. One exception to that might be in moving the key for a wireless connection but even then best to do it manually. I'm glad you checked back - even if you'd gotten it all figured out by then - as most people certainly wouldn't bother to check a post that was amost 3 weeks old. Enjoy. -- Galen - MS MVP - Windows (Shell/User & IE) http://dts-l.org/ "My life is spent in one long effort to escape from the commonplaces of existence." - Sherlock Holmes |
