Default Add/Remove Programs Screen

While removing a couple of unwanted programs, I noticed that the contents in
the Add/Remove Programs have moved about 1/3rd down from the top. Thus there
are just blank spaces at the beginning of the screen and I have to scroll
down to find the programs. What causes this behaviour and how can it fixed
so items go to the top of the screen?
Note that I did a system restore to July 12th and the screen remains as
explained above.
Running Win Me.
Thanks,
Ed

Hang in there Ed I'm sure someone will be along to help soon. I have seen
this asked in the ng's before but I think it was in XP but at the moment
can't find the relevant info.

You can look here, but please be careful. The fix is for XP and I have
never heard of ME being affected in the same way.
Ensure you have an export of the Uninstall key before you try
anything.

Add/Remove- part of program list is blank.

Go he

Go down to here on that page:

seen the problem reported but in XP and didn't remember if it had happened
in ME so I hope that Ed is careful and manages to fix the problem.

Default Add/Remove Programs Screen

FWIW - The only two issues with "Add/Remove Programs" in WinMe that I can
recall were :
a) concerning malware - Noel's solution was to suggest :-

"You may have a virus/spyware hijack

download the Stinger from here and run it to make sure that A-V-disabling
viruses are not present on your PC
http://download.nai.com/products/mca...rt/stinger.exe

- update your virus scanner and run a full system scan of all files.

Reboot to Safe Mode and run CWShredder - to remove variants of the
CoolWebSearch hijacker.
http://www.merijn.org/cwschronicles.html

Use CWShredder, the removal tool:
http://www.merijn.org/files/cwshredder.zip
http://www.merijn.org/files/CWShredder.exe
http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads...CWShredder.exe
http://www.zerosrealm.com/downloads/CWShredder.zip

download AdAware from www.lavasoftusa.com, install, update, and run it to
remove spyware, adware,
and other such nasties from your system."

b) concerning the registry and specifically TweakUI - which reinforces
Alan's suggestion of a *possible* registry issue.
The TweakUI issue is covered in :-
"Error Message When Removing Program with Add/Remove Programs"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/141697/en-us

A further option is to run scanreg /fix and see if that 'fixes' it, as it
does sound Registry related

Sorry if these lead up a blind alley but have to be worth a try. I'll keep
looking.

Mart

Default Add/Remove Programs Screen

Thank you folks,

I have tried *ALL but one* of the instructions provided by Alan and Mart.
The exception is TweakUI, which is not installed on my PC (and not
recommended to be installed on Win Me - per Microsoft's software support
articles). Here's a summary:

A) Alan's suggestion - when downloading the link, a window came up with
"access denied for OS Win Me." Thus it is strictly XP. Part of the
downloaded screen for kellys-korner web site showed up. Went down to page
"Add or Remove - White Space" It was not listed at all.
B) Mart's/Noel's suggestions on malwa Tried them all. 1) No
spyware/viruses; 2) Run *scanreg /fix* - no success.
I understand that this is a Registry-related issue and will keep searching.
Your additional input is most appreciated.
Joan, thanks for asking me to hang in there! I've read other posts in this
NG and you're always most positive.
Regards,
Ed

Default Add/Remove Programs Screen

Please disregard some of the above. I Googled my way into downloading
TweakIU.
The problem is still there with the *blank spaces* in the "expanded" icon of
Add/Remove Programs' screen. However, after running TweakIU by double
clicking on Control Panel I get the Window of ALL the contents from top to
bottom.
Thank so much.

Default Add/Remove Programs Screen

Ed, you're welcome and I'm glad to hear that you've now resolved the *blank
spaces* issue by using TweakUI - thanks for the feedback.

BTW - I concur with Mike M's comments elsewhere. I don't know where you got
your download from, but the MS 'official' site is :-
http://www.microsoft.com/ntworkstati.../nttweakui.asp
where you will notice that WinMe is mentioned under System Requirements and
add that MS only warn that it is *unsupported* by them - but hey! WinMe is
no longer supported now anyway g

You should also be aware of the following warnings/notes reproduced with
acknowledgement to the late Koldbear

1) Do *not* change the first icon from "My Documents" on the Desktop tab
2) Do *not* uncheck: Search Results on the Desktop tab
3) Do *not* hide the Tweak UI icon on the Control Panel tab
4) Do *not* uncheck: Show Control Panel on Start Menu on the IE tab
5) Do *not* uncheck: Shell enhancements on the IE tab
6) To move "My Documents" folder, right-click on the Folder, and click
Properties.

HTH
