Default Upgrading Win ME to win 2000 (SP4) or XP?

Hi - i need to upgrade my venerable laptop which runs Win ME to either 2000
(SP4) or XP in order to get my iPod Nano to run. Can I do this and if so
how? Can i download it from the MSFT site (with payment i guess) or do i need
to do it in the real world? Any help gratefully accepted...Thanks! Nick

No MS Operating system can legally be downloaded from anywhere on the planet
(except for MSDN/TechNet subscribers) - you have to go out and buy a disk.

You *can* download a 120 day trial at:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/6...ion/trial.mspx

You may want to try it *before* you run out and *buy* it

Download the trial
The Windows XP Professional x64 Edition trial software download is available
at no charge. After you have completed the download registration process,
you will receive an e-mail message with a link to the download page. The
download page will include the download file and a product key for the trial
software. The file will be in ISO format and must be burned to a CD or DVD
before you can install the software on your computer.

The download file is large-over 550 megabytes (MB)-so the download may take
considerable time to complete. We recommend downloading the trial software
only if you have broadband, ADSL, or other high-speed Internet connections.

Note: If you choose to register to download the software, you will not
receive the product CD.

Also at the same page you can order the *free* trial CD

Order the trial CD online
The trial CD software kit is available only in English when you order it
from this Web site. Please allow 4 to 6 weeks for shipping CD orders.

There is no fee for the Windows XP Professional x64 Edition Trial Software
kit; however, all orders are subject to shipping and handling charges.
International orders may also be subject to import duties and taxes. If
ordering from this site to a location outside of the United States, you are
considered the importer of record and must comply with all laws and
regulations of the country/region in which you are receiving the shipment.

And since we are talking laptop here it is essential that the poster check
with the laptop manufacturer's web site that Win2K or XP is supported on
his model laptop and the necessary drivers available.

Sugien:
That's a relative and positive contribution, which can be appreciated by
anyone here.
Let's stick to this exhibition of your talents, without excursion into
realms of unrelated or disputable subjects, because of your one-sided
abstract tunnel vision.
If you can do that, you would be welcome, I am sure, otherwise don't bother.
Happy, healthy and safe holidays to you too.

Harry.

Harry,

I hardly think the original poster has a laptop with a 64 bit processor
running Win Me so the troll's suggestion to download the trial version of
XP Pro 64 is nothing short of ridiculous as is typical of "its" posts..

Think again as is evidenced by MikeM's post right after yours. You see
even when I do try and help I get kicked, so why should I bother? To answer
my own question I would have to say that no matter how much some would try
and think their self superior or try and keep me from helping I will do what
I think is right. Some will take what is told them by others as fact and
they never check those facts for their self.
I am contrary to what you may here instead, a good upright person. I
think it is just that some people need to feel superior to someone, and
anyone with suffice. It is quite easy for those like that to jump in on a
band wagon instead of seeing if that wagon has a good foundation or not.
What think seem like on Usenet and what things are in reality most
always are two quite different things. In real life I am a very well liked
and quite respected person who's word is never questioned; because I have
never ever broken my word. There are some in RL that have told me that
should I tell them that it was raining dollars they would run and get a
money bag to put it in. Of course that is just an example just to
illustrate the validity to which people take what I say in real life.
I guess I come here; because when all one gets from those around them
is agreement , then that person will seek out those whose opinion invariably
will differ; because diversity is the spice of life and if everyone agrees
with you then there is NO diversity and things get boring. If nothing else
when I go into a new news group that news group from that point on will
*not* be boring, well that is if those there take what others say about me
as fact instead of checking for their self.

Let's stick to this exhibition of your talents, without excursion into
realms of unrelated or disputable subjects, because of your one-sided
abstract tunnel vision.

You almost had me fooled there until "one-sided abstract tunnel vision";
because that is your opinion and opinions are like noses everyone has one
and some are kept stuck up in the air which puts their owner in danger of
tripping over their own feet.

If you can do that, you would be welcome, I am sure, otherwise don't
bother.

I think not; because in other NG's I have posted the *exact* same
information **before** regs have and my post get the once over knocking it;
but then a few days later a reg of the group post the *exact* same
information from the *exact* same source and their post is heralded as much
as had it been sent from a deity. Then posters wonder why I lash out.
Humans at their core after all are animals and like any animal if you kick
at them or poke at them with sticks they will lash out. Or if you talk to
one with an angry hostile voice you will get the same back in kind. However
if you and others would try and do like I do things would be much better;
because I treat (at first) everyone like what I would like to be treated and
even after being lashed out at, I most always will continue (for a short
time) treating them like what I would like to be treated; but although I do
try and be perfect I like ALL humans am NOT perfect no matter how much I
strive to be.
I do a much much better job in real life, I guess because people in
real life tend to treat one another with more respect when they are fact to
face; because they can NOT hide behind remailers and anon posts and such. I
don't hide behind such things; because I am the REAL DEAL and my real life
name, address and even phone number is quite easy to find in the UseNet
archives. I am a man and take responsibility for what I say instead of
hiding and spitting from in the dark and seclusion.

Happy, healthy and safe holidays to you too.

Likewise to you and yours.

Default Upgrading Win ME to win 2000 (SP4) or XP?

Bad news.

(1) WindowsMe to Windows 2000 as an upgrade is not supported.
(2) Upgrading ANY laptop with an OS that is not supported by the
manufacturer will lead to at best a laptop that half-works, at worst has
caused damage to hardware in the laptop.

Any tech worth his fee with tell you that Software can NOT harm hardware.
However you can check the Usenet archives; because this very subject
(software harming hardware) has been an on going debate for *years*. The
debate has *never* been resolved; however those in the *software can NOT
harm hardware* camp have been proven *right* time after time; because those
in the other camp (software CAN harm hardware) have NEVER been able to show
even ONE instance of proof, iow, they to date can NOT produce even a SINGLE
piece of software that can be PROVEN to harm hardware. Even a BIOS flashing
routine has been proven to NOT harm the hardware because the BIOS can be
re-flashed much like a hard drive can be re-formatted.

Thank you, Mike.
Considering his reply to my last post, my efforts were a waste and his
response doesn't deserve my feedback.
Sorry about that.

Harry.
