Upgrading Win ME to win 2000 (SP4) or XP?

Hi - i need to upgrade my venerable laptop which runs Win ME to either 2000
(SP4) or XP in order to get my iPod Nano to run. Can I do this and if so
how? Can i download it from the MSFT site (with payment i guess) or do i need
to do it in the real world? Any help gratefully accepted...Thanks! Nick

No MS Operating system can legally be downloaded from anywhere on the planet
(except for MSDN/TechNet subscribers) - you have to go out and buy a disk.

running Win Me so the troll's suggestion to download the trial version of

Think again as is evidenced by MikeM's post right after yours. You see
even when I do try and help I get kicked, so why should I bother? To answer
my own question I would have to say that no matter how much some would try
and think their self superior or try and keep me from helping I will do what
I think is right. Some will take what is told them by others as fact and
they never check those facts for their self.
I am contrary to what you may here instead, a good upright person. I
think it is just that some people need to feel superior to someone, and
anyone with suffice. It is quite easy for those like that to jump in on a

What think seem like on Usenet and what things are in reality most
always are two quite different things. In real life I am a very well liked

when I go into a new news group that news group from that point on will
*not* be boring, well that is if those there take what others say about me
as fact instead of checking for their self.

You almost had me fooled there until "one-sided abstract tunnel vision";
because that is your opinion and opinions are like noses everyone has one
and some are kept stuck up in the air which puts their owner in danger of
tripping over their own feet.

I think not; because in other NG's I have posted the *exact* same
information **before** regs have and my post get the once over knocking it;
but then a few days later a reg of the group post the *exact* same
information from the *exact* same source and their post is heralded as much
as had it been sent from a deity. Then posters wonder why I lash out.
Humans at their core after all are animals and like any animal if you kick
at them or poke at them with sticks they will lash out. Or if you talk to
one with an angry hostile voice you will get the same back in kind. However
if you and others would try and do like I do things would be much better;
because I treat (at first) everyone like what I would like to be treated and
even after being lashed out at, I most always will continue (for a short
time) treating them like what I would like to be treated; but although I do
try and be perfect I like ALL humans am NOT perfect no matter how much I
strive to be.
I do a much much better job in real life, I guess because people in
real life tend to treat one another with more respect when they are fact to
face; because they can NOT hide behind remailers and anon posts and such. I
don't hide behind such things; because I am the REAL DEAL and my real life
name, address and even phone number is quite easy to find in the UseNet
archives. I am a man and take responsibility for what I say instead of
hiding and spitting from in the dark and seclusion.

Bad news.

(1) WindowsMe to Windows 2000 as an upgrade is not supported.
(2) Upgrading ANY laptop with an OS that is not supported by the
manufacturer will lead to at best a laptop that half-works, at worst has
caused damage to hardware in the laptop.

Any tech worth his fee with tell you that Software can NOT harm hardware.
However you can check the Usenet archives; because this very subject
(software harming hardware) has been an on going debate for *years*. The
debate has *never* been resolved; however those in the *software can NOT
harm hardware* camp have been proven *right* time after time; because those
in the other camp (software CAN harm hardware) have NEVER been able to show
even ONE instance of proof, iow, they to date can NOT produce even a SINGLE
piece of software that can be PROVEN to harm hardware. Even a BIOS flashing
routine has been proven to NOT harm the hardware because the BIOS can be
re-flashed much like a hard drive can be re-formatted.
