Default Two DVD R/RW drives ok?

On my 2000-vintage Compaq Presario 7AP 190, I have
a DVD R/RW drive, and an old (as in original
equipment) CD drive which has just failed. This
may be a silly question, but is there any reason
I shouldn't go for the redundancy and flexibility
of replacing the CD drive with another DVD R/RW?
For instance, could the driver have any problems
operating two of these at once? I'm running
Win98 SE. And I'm not about to go into the DVD
piracy business .

Thanks.

Oops, my system had a peculiar hiccup and I thought
the first version of the message hadn't been sent.
Sorry.

How often did you use the redundancy and flexibility you had before the
failure? How tough was it to install the DVD R/RW?

They SHOULD work together, but now/then someone will post a problem.
Then it's all hell talk of Master/Slave, separate IDE cables, jumpers,
drivers, 3rd party software, etc!

If you are a closed entity then there are NO hardware issues (fleshware
maybe) but if you intend to produce CD's to be read on strange CD
readers you may find that those written on DVD burner simple refuse to
operate. (sensitivity issues).
From experience:
CD's burn (slowly) on CD burner.
DVD's on DVD burner.

Have fun

I burn photo CDs and DVDs which may end up showing my
holiday pictures on various people's systems or TVs,
so I guess I should think about this one. Thanks.

Thanks also to other posters offering reassurance
about the general issue of substituting drives.

The only redundancy I had was in CD burning. How tough? -- not.

Sounds more like a reflectivity issue due to the CD burning media used.

I cannot speak with authority about having two DVD burners on the same
system; however, I tried putting two CDRWs in the same box and it would not
work. As I recall (this was a couple of years ago), the hardware
functioned OK but the software was confused by the presence of two burners
and would not burn CDs. IIRC, the software was Direct/Easy CD.

I would ask the drive or software maker if two DVD burners will work
together.

If not tough, you don't need the redundancy, I think! Just install a new
one at the appropriate time after a suitable period of mourning.

The problem I had was Nero.
The crippled version that comes with each drive probably won't
run the other drive. I never figgered out how to get them
both to run. The solution is to buy the commercial version
of Nero, which can cost you more than both the drives combined.
This MAY not be a problem if both your drives are identical.
