Can not install USB Drivers
I reinstalled Win 98 SE on my buddies PC. Installed all upgrades for
Win 98SE. Trying to install USB drivers for a HP Deskjet 882C and a Toshiba PCX 2200 CAble modem. When installing from the install wizard, the driver is reconized, and targeted and each time it tells me that is could not find information about this device. I have reinstalled his OS and Drivers before, but something is not allowing these drivers to install correctly. Thank you in advance. |

Exactly *how* are you trying to install the devices mentioned? Are you following
the explicit instructions of each manufacturer in the order they give, and are you using their driver discs to install them? Many USB devices require that the drivers from the manufacturer's disc be installed prior to connecting the device. Some H-P printers do the opposite, so the directions of each manufacturer must be followed. Please provide the exact error message and when it is received. Look in Device Manager...are any devices 'splatted' with a red X or an exclamation mark? Are there any devices listed in the "Other" category there? Expand the Universal Serial Bus Controllers category there, and post back with what is listed under it. Please provide us with the manufacturer and model of the computer, and if the USB ports are built in, or were added on using a PCI card. Have you been to Windows Update and installed are the Critical Updates that apply to your system? Only install the criticals, not the optionals or the driver updates. -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP Shell/User, A+ http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "wizof103" wrote in message oups.com... Started with the printer, Came up on the screen that it had found a HP
822C Printer, caneled out of the install wizard. Inserted the HP Disk that came with the Printer. When I selected the port type as USB, it kicked me back to a read me file that gave instructions from the install wizard. Followed them to a "T" and would always get the error that the information could no be found in the specified loaction. I donloaded the driver for the CAble modem directly from it's manufactorer, and had the same results. I can see the .inf file they are looking for by it will not accept it as the proper file. glee wrote: Exactly *how* are you trying to install the devices mentioned? I guess HP made that printer both ways, parallel and USB. The one I have is
parallel. Either way see if this helps: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...cname=bpd09107 -- Brian A. Generally with USB devices, the manufacturer's instructions tell you not to
plug in the device until after the drivers are installed. With some, you are told to restart after the installation, then plug in the printer or other device. With others, you are instructed to plug in the device during the installation. I have yet to see one that has you first plug in the device and then install drivers. See if your friend has the instructions for the printer installation - often on a "quick start" card. PattyL "wizof103" wrote in message oups.com... I suggest you carefully follow the instructions given at the link Brian provided in
his reply, to remove the printer and its files. Then follow the instructions there exactly, to reinstall the printer. The preferred method they give is he Removing and Reinstalling a USB Printer Driver Using a Software Tool on Microsoft(R) Windows 98 or Windows Me : http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...cname=bpd09106 -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP Shell/User, A+ http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "wizof103" wrote in message oups.com... Hi Patty,
Have a look here = HP Deskjet - How to use the CD shipped with your printer to manually install a USB printer driver on a Windows 98/Me computer : http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...cname=bpd09105 I used the same procedure last week to install a new H-P 3845 Deskjet at work, following the instructions on the included installation poster. I read it three times because I thought I was reading it wrong....they actually have you plug the printer into the computer before installing the drivers. A new one on me...... :-o -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP Shell/User, A+ http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "PattyL" wrote in message ... Good find. That is also the reason that I said "generally". I believe that
the big difference is that this particular driver is installed using an inf file that is available on the CD and Windows is able to get enough information from the device to identify it. With the ones where you have to run an exe file first, the inf file is extracted and becomes available (is extracted to some folder) and then when you plug in the printer (or other device), the device is recognized and the driver completes installation based on the information in the inf file.
