Shutting down when running programs

Running Win98SE on a PII-350 with 192MB Ram. Has been running very well,
but now is shutting down when trying to run AVG Antivirus Scan, Spy Sweeper
or AdAware; or trying to download any Window Updates. Also have problems
with mouse freezing, and when that happens, a thin red line shows across the
top of the screen.

Thought it might be a virus or spyware, but can't get the programs to
complete.

Suggestions? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

My first hunch would say your video adapter is giving out.
I've never heard of a virus or any malware that would put a red line
across the top of the screen. You might try reseating your video card and
making sure you have the latest drivers.
And I could be way off in left field somewhere too.... :-)

also check your internal fans , you may be experiencing overheating

Try running your anti-virus and AdAware in SafeMode.
If it still shuts down, you may have a fan or two that isn't working
and causing overheating.
If everything completes OK and you still have problems in Normal (if
there really is such a thing) Windows, then it may be your Video Card
drivers that need to be updated or reinstalled.
If you have another mouse, try it.
