Default MSN Messenger "No Voice Chat with update to version 6.2

My friend has Windows 98 first edition. He downloaded the newest versions
of MSN Messenger (Windows Messenger) and can no longer have voice chat or
transfer files with me. I have Windows XP. How can I remove all remnants of
Messenger from his system and try installing an older version of Messenger?
When I do uninstall the new Messenger, it won't let him log into his
Passport, it forces him to upgrade from Messenger 6 to Messenger 6.2.

I want to be able to completely remove every thread in the Registry relating
to Messenger and start again. Is this possible?

MSN Messenger and Windows Messenger are *not* the same application. Which
is he using and which are you using?

Are you running WinXP SP2?

It has nothing to do with my machine, I am able to do remote assistance and
all the other features with other Windows XP users. I do not use SP2, I am
sticking with SP1. I don't like the patch, I think it's a good thing for
newbies but not advanced users. I just end-up disabling all it's features
and then tweaking security in IE6.

So how do you remove all the remnants of Messenger from Windows 98?

Again, *which* Messenger? (Windows Messenger does not install with Win98
but it may be added.)

Perhaps it'd be better if the Win98 user posted here him/herself.

Newest version is what I said in the beginning, you don't think that is 6.2?
Perhaps another tech can give me a hand at this....I think you did your
best.

Say Bear, sorry to snap at you like that. We all get tired from
time-to-time and I felt you were condescending but you were thought I was a
newbie and I'm an advanced user. I should have been more specific in the
beginning. The other user has Messenger Version 6.2, but I think I know
there problem. If you read my post about the Modem 2200 Westell, well, they
have that as well. I am thinking that the Modem may be the problem with
their Messenger just like it was a problem with my launching my game. Funny
how many tweaks a person learns in just a week's time.

Hello PCR,

Nice to meet you, is there a way to remove all remnants of Messenger (MSN
and/or Windows Versions in my friends Windows 98 OS? He has downloaded
several upgrades over time and it is my thought that removing all remnants
(if possible) from Windows 98 and reinstalling the newest version of MSN
Messenger, he may regain the use of all the features, i.e. voice chat, video
conferencing etc.

thanks,
Lee

Oops, I don't use it, & I don't know whether all those things are in MSN
Messenger. I do have "MSN Messenger 4.5" in "Control Panel, Add/Remove
Programs, Install/Uninstall tab". "NetMeeting 3.01" is also there, as a
separate item.

In the "Windows Setup tab, Communications category", I see "Microsoft
Chat 2.5" & "Virtual Private Networking" (which is unchecked).

I would go there first, instead of the Registry. But I might also wait
for Spring & for Bear to awaken!
