Help: Tried doing a clean install of Windows 98 on HP Pavilion 63
Hi, I am trying to do a clean install of Windows 98 using my OEM Windows 98
disc. I have a valid product key to that computer even though I can't find the original Windows 98 disc that came with it. This Windows 98 disc is bootable and the CDROM boots to it without a problem, I did not make a startup boot disc because of this. I followed online guides on performing a clean install and used FDisk utility to delete and recreate the primary drive. I then booted into Setup and formatted it and began the installation process. When I get to the end of the installation process and after entering the name of the computer and product key, after a reboot I get this error message: Windows Protection Error. Please Restart the computer. C:\WINDOWS\system\vmm32.xvd: Missing/unable to load I have deleted and reformatted the drive 3 times and consistently get this error message. Should I have still created a boot disc? I don't understand how this file could be missing when your starting from scratch. Any advice or knowledge would be appreciated. Thank you! |

Hi DL,
See if this MSKB article, "Error Message: VMM32.VXD: Missing/Unable to Load", is applicable: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q191874/ Regards, -- Patti MacLeod Microsoft MVP - Windows Shell/User "DL" wrote in message ... thanks Patti, it was useful information. However, I cannot understand how
scanner software could be causing the conflict. I followed the directions on that page but I turned out that I did not have either of those files. I rebooted it and somehow I finally got windows to boot up. However, now before bootup it says that a file in missing in system.ini directory called vnetbios.vxd. I just ignore the message and it boots up. I don't really use this PC, so I am not going mess with it much longer. At least I finally got windows to load, I still need to install more drivers. Thanks for help. You're welcome for the help :-)
If you want to give it a try, use the instructions for WIN98 in Step 3 of the Resolution in this MSKB article, "Error Message: Cannot Find a Device File That May Be Needed to Run Windows": http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=132008 Extract the vnetbios.vxd file from the WIN98 folder on the install CD to the C:\Windows\System folder Regards, -- Patti MacLeod Microsoft MVP - Windows Shell/User "DL" wrote in message ... thanks Patti, it was useful information. LOL, Patti I must have messed with something when I was tinkering around in
system.ini directory by accident trying to fix the previous problem. I thought it was strange so I did another install of Windows and problem solved! I also solved the earlier problem by booting into Startup from of the C:, it finished installing and configuring the drivers properly. The PC is running great! However, I am having one last issue with the modem. I installed the device driver and checked in Device Manager to make it worked. Device Manager said it did but I keep getting disconnects. I am missing a driver called PCI Communications and not sure where to find it. I think this will solve the problem. Thanks (I find Windows XP so much easier to work with!!) The PCI Communications Device is usually a reference to the virtual serial
port that is required for the modem, and is usually installed with the modem drivers. Remove the PCI Communications Device and the modem in Device Manager, restart and when Windows detects the new hardware (i.e., the PCI Communications Device) and prompts for the drivers, point Windows to the disk or folder that contains the modem drivers.
