Default display settings default to 16 colors ??Smc not responding

My computer's display defaults to 16 colors - 640 x 480 and will not be
reset through display/settings

with "-alt-ctrl -del" - Smc not responding is highlighted, end task frees
the computer but could this be an indication of the underlying problem

the fault seems to have arrisen since i have been usingdigital cameras

any suggestions - i'm very much a novice!!

Reboot to Safe Mode
Open Device Manager
Remove ALL Display Adapters
Remove ALL Monitors
Reboot to Normal Mode - Windows will reinstall the required drivers -
hopefully curing your problem.

16 colours and 640x480 would normally suggest that you are using default
VGA video drivers rather than those for your graphics card. Have you
changed your video drivers recently? If so then can you reverse that
change? If not the following might help.

a) Boot to Safe Mode and open the Device Manager (Control Panel | System
Properties) and delete all entries in the section Display Adapters.
Reboot and let Win Me redetect your hardware and reinstall your graphics
drivers. Now configure screen resolution and colour depth to meet your
requirements

b) If a) doesn't work and you are still in default VGA Mode visit your
graphic card's manufacturer's web site and download and then install the
latest Win Me compatible drivers for your video card.

c) If neither a) nor b) work you could try using system restore [Start |
Programs | Accessories | System Tools] and rolling your system back to a
checkpoint created when the display was correct but only take this route
if the required checkpoint is not more than say a week old.

Do a Search on your PC for files named "SMC.EXE" - r-click on any found, and
see where they originate (click Properties, and look at the Version
details) -post back with details.

This would seem to be part of the Sygate firewall -as Mart suggested.
When the computer is running normally, does the SMC still appear as 'not
responding in the Task Manager? If so, then you may need to
uninstall/reinstall the firewall.Since Symantec bought Sygate last year, it
appears that they have chopped off support for the consumer products at the
knees - and there are no easily searchable knowledgebases to which I can
refer (I've never used Sygate firewall, so have no idea how good the Help
section within it is)
You may want to repost a fresh query, with a more appropriate Subject
header

Thanks again i am now aware that it is a sygate file, and yes the message is
there whether sygate is active (on line) or if I halt it (off line) for
defragging or installing I kill sygate as it interferes with workings.

Yes, I included the query as I wondered if it were relevent to the initial
problem.

It's good to have the colours back for the photo's many thanks!!
