Help!!! Puter freezes up every 30 seconds or so
For several days now my puter freezes up abuot every 30 seconds and remains frozen for about 30 seconds. It's not the mouse. When it freezes I click on the caps lock and it does not respond. I've tried rebooting, drafragmenting, anti virus, disc cleanup. Nothing works. Any sugestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Jen |

Help!!! Puter freezes up every 30 seconds or so
Jen -
Some sites which may help: http://aumha.org/a/tshoot.htm http://aumha.org/a/health.htm http://www.aumha.org/ http://search.atomz.com/search/?sp-q...sp-p=all&sp-w- Then there is the old "check for spyware" suggestions: First, install the programs and then update them immediately, so that they have the current versions, and definitions. Read the HelpFiles and Tutorials. Run them one at a time. With Ad-Aware you may have it generally clean whatever it finds. The same applies for CWShredder. Spybot S&D requires special attention (listed below), as does HijackThis (Only more so. Details listed below) The programs are listed in order of their general strength, safety, and purpose. It is perhaps best to install and run these in this order of appearance. Ad-Aware http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/ Ad-Aware Tutorial http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/foru...howtutorial=48 CWShredder (cleans all Cool Web Search malware) http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4086.html CWShredder Tutorial http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/foru...howtutorial=47 Spybot S&D http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=download Spybot Tutorial (Must Read) http://tomcoyote.com/SPYBOT/index1.php http://tomcoyote.com/SPYBOT/index2.php http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/foru...howtutorial=43 This item below is designed to *prevent* installation of malware and the like by comparing known CLSID's of these "bad guys" with what is in its definitions. It doesn't remove anything, nor will it fix anything that is already in your PC. Rather, it will prevent installation or re-installation of the item once it has been removed either manually, or by the use of another program which will perform the duty of removing the spyware. SpywareBlaster (prevents installation of spyware, Trojans, etc.) http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html SpywareBlaster Tutorial http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/foru...howtutorial=49 If you use Spybot S & D, be sure to clean *ONLY* the items displayed in *RED*. DO NOT clean any items displayed in Black or Green at this time. Lastly there is HijackThis. Hijack this is a very powerful, last resort type of program which is generally best used in conjunction with help from those who deal with the findings of the log created by the HijackThis scan. It does nothing in the scan itself; it merely says what is in and running on your PC. The items must be checked-marked to be "cleaned". Therein is the issue; you must know *exactly* what you are checking-off before you proceed. If you don't, you can quite possibly disable many useful and vital functions of your PC. Remember; read the Tutorials, and seek help at SpywareInfo Forums, Net-Integration, or TomCoyote forums for safety's sake. HijackThis http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html If the preceding site is down, you may get HijackThis from Major Geeks (amongst other sites as well) Hijack This (from Major Geeks) http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html HijackThis Tutorials **(MUST READ)** http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/htlogtutorial.html http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/foru...howtutorial=42 http://hjt.wizardsofwebsites.com/ Where to seek help with your HijackThis scan log SpywareInfo Forums http://forums.spywareinfo.com/ other help forums for HijackThis: Net-Integration http://forums.net-integration.net/index.php?c=19 TomCoyote http://forums.tomcoyote.com/index.php?showforum=27 More general info on Spyware, Malware, and other undesirable unwanted spyware, etc: Jim Eshelmans WSC Aumha site: http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm more details from Jim and his site http://www.aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm His quick scan for parasites (scripting must be enabled for this to work) http://www.aumha.org/a/noads.htm A free on-line Trojan scanner GFI http://www.windowsecurity.com/trojanscan/ PestPatrol on-line scan http://www.pestscan.com/home.asp HTH - -- LuckyStrike How to make a good post: http://www.dts-l.org/goodpost.htm http://home.satx.rr.com/badour/html/post.html -------------------------------------------------------------------- "Hostalover" wrote in message ... Probably LuckyStrike & Candlin are onto it. Still, you do not say you
ran a Scandisk... http://support.microsoft.com/default...;EN-US;q287914 Articles about Scandisk http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;Q286263 Articles about Defrag I must warn that Scandisk may not do a great job when there is a great one to do... http://cquirke.mvps.org/9x/scandisk.htm Therefore, perhaps UNcheck "Automatically fix errors" on it's front screen. It will then ask whether you want each error fixed. If it sounds truly horrible, say "No!", and post the log. The log will be "C:\Scandisk.log". Do not let it constantly restart, either. 1. Turn off screen saver (R-Clk Desktop, Properties, Screen Saver-- None) 2. Turn off power management (Control Panel, Power Management-- Always On,Never,Never,Never) 3. Disable any permanent internet cable connection, perhaps. 4. Suspend Task Scheduler 5. Turn off interfering programs. Use "StartupCop" or "EndItAll2" from PCMag (below). Or "START, Run, MSConfig, Startup tab". Note what is unchecked. Then, go to the General tab & disable the entire Startup Group, by clicking "Selective.." & unchecking "Load Startup...". Reboot. Don't forget to re-enable before the next boot. 6. Use "HDValet" from PCMag, or (a) "Control Panel, Internet Options, Delete Files button, bolt Delete all offline content, OK, OK" (b) "START, Run, %TEMP%", & delete all files that will let you. This will likely be "C:\Windows\Temp". This is best done after a fresh boot, unless you have not seen the message "Reboot to complete this install". 7. Run Scandisk (Thorough, usually w/o write testing. Check all three items under "Scandisk, Advanced button, 'Check files for' box". If you want to be informed as it does a fix, UNcheck "Automatically fix errors" on the front screen, or look inside "C:\Scandisk.log" afterwards.) 8. "START, Run, Defrag /p /details". Apparently, "/p" Defrags the unmovables. The purpose of steps 1-5 is only to prevent constant restarts of Scandisk & Defrag, if you get them; but DEFINITELY turn off the Virus Scanner. Scandisk should be done perhaps once a month, and certainly after every serious crash. Do a Defrag after a sluggish boot or when this says so: http://www.pcmag.com/ 's CrackUp, by Gregory A. Wolking & Bob Flanders. Also, take DiskAction, to determine what is constantly writing to the HDD, which causes the restarts. Take BHOCop & StartupCop too. "DiskAction" reports the last 12 processes that access any partition. It discovered the MS Critical Update Notification Tool was accessing my HDD every five minutes. It can be uninstalled in "Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs". Then, occasionally, "START, Windows Update" on your own. Open Control Panel, & click the Power Management icon. At the Power
Schemes tab... (a) Select "Always on" from the Power Schemes dropdown menu. (b) Set System Standby to "Never". (c) Set Turn Off Monitor to "Never". (d) Set Turn Off Hard Disks to "Never". That is what is meant by "Always on,Never,Never,Never". I do it, because something once was constantly writing to my hard drive. It may not have been that, but I still have a Sleep button on my keyboard that works regardless of those settings. -- Thanks or Good Luck, There may be humor in this post, and, Naturally, you will not sue, should things get worse after this, PCR "rooster" wrote in message ... | PCR; | Could you clarify 2.
