CD drives quit simultaneously

Your problem may lie with a loose or faulty data cable attached to both optical drives, or a problem with the IDE controller they are attached to (I assume the secondary IDE controller). When the computer boots, does the boot screen show the drives being enumerated, and do they appear on the secondary IDE channel as master and slave? In Device Manager, what is shown under the Hard Disk Controllers category, on each of the tabs? I can't see how to copy what I see so I can post here. In Device Manager, expand the Hard Disk Controllers category....write down what is listed there, and if any of the entries have a red X or an Exclamation mark on them. Switch from the Device Manager tab to the Performance tab. Does it say "configured for optimal performance"? I did run msinfo32 as PCR suggested, under Components/Multimedia/CDRom, I see Not particularly relevant. In Device Manager, for my HP CDWriter, in Settings the only things checked are * auto insert notification * DMA Both CD drives' settings tabs should also have Disconnect checked, in most cases. Does this sound normal? Nothing ever sounds normal to me..... eg -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP Shell/User, A+ http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm |

Thanks, Glen. A comment before I do the above. Thecomputer (Intel HX430 chip, P166, 1996 or so), has not had any major changes except one recently, the computer guy, who knows my computer, recently said my 2 partitions were not arranged properly (were that way for 6 years). He renamed them. At the same time, he put in a new cable connecting my CD writer drive and my old reader drive. When I brought it home and for several weeks with daily cold boot, everything worked fine. Then the 2 CD drives quit strangely. (new cable worked for 2 weeks, too). Before I make the change above (significant to me, anyway), is it likely that what I show above is actually wrong? I think if anything he did (don't think it relates) was incorrect, it would not have worked for 2 weeks. Comment? MS |

Good questions, and I can't give a definitive answer. I really do not
know if that Intel utility is for use on that old of a motherboard. I would try the other suggestions.....check the box for "Exists in all hardware profiles", and enable "Both IDE Channels Enabled" on the Settings tab of the Busmaster IDE controller. Then click OK all the way out and restart. I would also consider bringing it back to the tech that made the changes and asking him why it stopped working. I do not know what changes he made, and don't want ro start second-guessing. -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP Shell/User, A+ ms wrote: glee wrote: replies inline below.... My main HP CDWriter, still: on bootup, drive light flashes, when I open the drive door it blinks several times, when I insert a good CD and close the door, it blinks several times, but then stops. And still reads "drive not ready" If nothing else, the same cable is surely connected to the CD reader, and the power cable portion to the CD writer. Many thanks for helping me get this far, anyway. If it wasn't so difficult for me, I'd open the box and address the cable issue. Any other thoughts on the above, now that one drive is working? MS |

OK, some success is perhaps better than none, suppose.
Regarding the Intel utility I linked, do *not* use it. It is apparently for another group of Intel chipsets, and is only for use in Win95, not Win98. Let me spend a little time looking this over....no day off this week so I am spread a little thin. Could you copy the contents of your C:\autoexec.bat and C:\config.sys files, and paste the contents into a reply to this? You may not have anything in one or both of them, but take a look....you can use Notepad or msconfig. I vaguely recall Win98 having a problem sometimes with this chipset, mis-identifying and then disabling the secondary controller. It's been a long time since I have even seen the entries you describe. -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP Shell/User, A+ http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "ms" wrote in message ... Thanks, Glen.
My autoexec.bat file is empty. All my config.sys has is NUMLOCK=OFF. I always run a minimalist system, and in recent years, install very few items. When the CD drives stopped, I had not installed anything for several days before. My task manager when offline has 5 items in it. I mention this stuff as my machine is not a mess AFAIK, pretty straightforward operation usually, have been running the same W98SE install since 2001.
