You may have things in the wrong order . . .
1. A home page is an address on the WWW (= World Wide
Web = Internet. URL = Universal Resource Locator, techies'
word for a web address.)
2. In order to connect with a web address any PC needs
an Internet Browser like Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox.
This is a piece of software (usually free: both those are.)
3. Default web browser for Win98 is IE version 6 (perhaps 7,
although this was issued for WinXP.) Win98 instals IE.v.4
by default, and you have to use it to connect to
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/dow.../getitnow.mspx
(and try to locate the version you want, that will run under Win98.)

The short name of Internet Explorer is IEXPLORE.EXE -- so if
it is not listed on your Start Menu you can start it by
/ start / run / IEXPLORE.EXE

It is easy to customize the Start Menu i.e. get rid of the
junk and add any EXEcutable filel you want. It is an ordinary
Win98 folder at
c:\windows\start menu
containing links to EXEcutables (programs.) You can put
any link anywhere you like. Those stored directly in
c:\windows\start menu
willl show as soon as you key the Start button, i.e. one
tier above those in c:\windows\start menu\programs.

Or you can simply keep on your Desktop an icon for
(link to) your web browser.

When you know how to start your web browser:
1. You may get first a Microsoft menu insisting on a
couple of choices how you want it to look. Do these
because otherwise you will see this menu again.
2. To go to your chosen URL, just type it in the
top white box and key RETurn.
3. To make this your default home page (i.e. connect
with this URL every time you go on line) use / Tools / Options.

We are glad to help -- so post back here with results
so we know what happened.

It is a bit surprising to find a "naive user" using Win98,
a splendid powerful Operating System but obsolete (says
it manufacturer) and no longer on the market. Your
task of going on line tests your current skills rather than
your current setup, because quite straightforward so long
as you have either your phone line or the TV coax cable
plugged into the correct ports on the back of your PC
(not discussed above.)

This NG is the only one still adequately active for Win98
help. If for any reason you decide to buy a newer PC
(as may become necessary for peripherals like printers)
you will be under strong pressure to buy a new PC with MS
Vista OS preinstalled. This wastes money (since Vista
has multimedia fancies that require expensive hardware.)
1. Try if you can to buy a new system with WindowsXP,
which does all you want and is easier for the beginner.
(Its habits match those of earlier MS OSs. MS changed
these for Vista: and may now have realized it made
some wrong decisions.)
2. In all these types of PC the / start / help menus can
solve most of your problems. If you are book-oriented
look for works published by IDG (Dummies series) or Que.
