I just installed the first version.

Does downloading all the updates effectively make it SE or is that a
different creature?

If so, is there a way to upgrade free?

No, downloading updates does not turn Win98 into Win98SE. It is a
different creature.

You have to buy Win98SE

No: main differences a
1. Win98SE supports USB version 2 devices, which
are faster than v.1. The specification came out just
after Win98 and manufacturers adopted it swiftly,
because faster. Hence Win98SE.
2. Win98SE also solves the "NDIS problem" which
(usually) wrecked the Win98 instal routine on CPUs
faster than 2.2 GHz.
No free upgrade changes Win98 to Win98SE.

I'll submit this related to 98FE v 98SE per your other discussion relating
to drive installation and partitioning and the now installed FE.

IIRC, FE has or may have drive size issues [243450{large IDE -32
GB -certain BIOS}, 263044 {64gig issue}, 273017{IDE cache}, 272620{negative
HD numbers}, 311561{MSDOS HD errors}, other], which updates were offered
for. It is limited to IE5.5, and needs or may need other updates as well,
such as:
DirectX to version 7;
MDAC to version 2.5;
VC to 6{depends on usage};
DUN update;
Windows Installer;
a once offered wucustomerservicepack1[for Gold];
rootsupd;
VBrun time libraries;
and several others.
Both FE and SE updates through WU seem to only supply the minimum
essentials so any future issue may require a little research on the issue on
the Internet and/or in this group or other support forum.

IIRC, last time I ran FE updates with IE5.5 and after SECCD, it installed
only 9 updates. I did have to go through some of my old files to find some
previously offered for a couple issues, that had not been superceded.

Exactly, Don. Many third party manufacturers will or at least have in the
recent past supported Windows 98 Second Edition on flash drives. My HP
printer uses Windows 2000 drivers on Windows 98 Second Edition and I use
Windows ME drivers with the ATI Radeon 9800 XT graphics card. Windows 98
Second Edition supports the Windows Driver Model which is also used on
Windows 2000 Professional. For this reason, as well as third party support I
feel that Windows 98 Second Edition support will really be over after Windows
2000 Professional reaches the end of its life from Microsoft in 2010. I
currently run Windows 98 Second Edition in Fat32 and XP Professional in NTFS
with an Intel dual core 3.40 Ghz. Pentium 4 chip on 2 separate hard drives
and it works fine. Windows 98 Second Edition only recognizes one core but
does not even give any errors or anything else in device manager and works
like a champ. The only big issue that I ran into was trying to run Windows
98 Second Edition with 2 gigabytes of memory and even making the appropriate
software changes with the memory management article did not help but of
course XP Professional worked fine with the 2 gigabytes of ram. I have since
downgraded to my previous 512 mb ram chip from Crucial and Windows 98 Second
Edition works fine again and I tweaked it with the below article just to be
sure. I even tried making it work with msconfig with the 2 gigabytes but it
would not want to run correctly and would do funny things and reboot and/or
give me memory errors. The strange thing was the msconfig utility would list
it as 999 megabytes from the 2 gigabytes despite what I did but it may have
just been XP Professional interfering because XP Professional can see Windows
98 Second Edition in my system. I may end up using BING down the road but
there is certainly a lot of documentation I would need to read through on
BING and it does work well when I tested it in the past but currently I am
busy with work and reading up on many of the security vulnerabilities out
there to completely want to reconfigure my system and why change something
when it works so well until necessary of course.

Dave, I will also mention that many fairly recent games require a minimum of
Windows 98 Second Edition and will not work on the original Windows 98
Edition. An example, of this would be the original Halo game by Microsoft
for the PC. Nowadays, many newer Windows games will only work on Windows XP
and Windows Vista and the simple games like puzzle games that used to require
Windows 95 as a minimum now usually require Windows 98 as a minimum.
