ME getting very slow
I have noticed a considerable slowing down of almost all operations
during the past month or so. This is especially noticeable when surfing. Pages open slowly and even after they open (and status bar says "done") the cursor remains a thin line and I cannot scroll down. After several seconds, the cursor pops back to its original arrow shape and I can scroll. It is getting to be very unpleasant to surf. I have trimmed my startup programs, run Adware, Spybot, Scandisk, Defrag. My resources right now read 44%. I am running FireFox 5.1, McAffee, ZoneAlarm, and SpyBlaster. I use a dialup connection (and there is no parallel problem with my other computer, running the same programs on XP Pro, with the same dialup connection). I don't know if this is a resources problem or what? Not too much more I can deselect from the startup. Any ideas appreciated. Richard, Moving through Molasses |

ME getting very slow
Thanks for the suggestion. I ran CCleaner and it cleared out a LOT of
"crap" from the registry and applications. Alas, the problem of a slow crawling ME continues. This happened about the time I removed NAV and downloaded the Hotfix for ME and added McAffee. All of those changes, however, may be irrelevant. Still, they are the only significant changes I've made. Delboy wrote: BTW, running CrapCleaner will disable System Restore for that session. You may still have bits of NAV installed and attempting to run - look here

Thanks, Noel, for the references. I used the Symantec cleaner and there
has been a noticeable difference in speed. NAV is a bit like cancer that has metasticised. richard Noel Paton wrote: You may still have bits of NAV installed and attempting to run - look here http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...sv_ lvl=&seg= and here http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...sv=&osv_ lvl= |

ME getting very slow
Delboy,
Curious about the SR being disabled for the session after using CC. I use CC frequently, sometimes a number of times during the day. As yet, I am still getting restore points on a regular basis (I am using XP, does that make a difference?). In the CC setup, I do have Old Prefetch data and Windows log files unchecked. In any case, I am getting my auto SR points without problem. Heirloom, old and bad need of restoral "Delboy" wrote in message ... ME getting very slow
Hi Heirloom
Running ME only; after using CC, if I try to open SR, I get a message "SR cannot run until you restart ...". I don't get any auto RPs anyway as I run ZoneAlarm and an "always on" cable broadband which appear to be other apps which inhibits auto RPs. So I cannot comment on whether CC inhibits auto RPs as well as preventing SR from opening. -- Delboy - still p****d from Xmas; about to top up for New Year A common mistake that people made when trying to design something completely foolproof was to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools. ME getting very slow
The reason for the 'cannot run' message is a very simple one - CCleaner has
shelved some of the cleaning operations until the next reboot, by creating a WININIT.INI file (and should have told you to reboot, in the process). One of the first things that System Restore does, is to check for the presence of such a file, and puts up that warning if it detects it. This has NOT disabled System Restore - merely prevented it from attempting to either create or use an existing restore point until the WININIT.INI file's actions are completed, so that the data it uses is current with the archive and the machine configuration. Hope that explains it a little! -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2006, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.crashfixpc.com/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's "Delboy" wrote in message ...
