Default defrag problem

I am running Windows 98SE. I am not able to defrag! This
has been going on for many months and my computer is
getting slower and slower.

When I start the defrag procedure, I get as far as the
window showing the drive I want to defrag, I click "start"
and then everything freezes.

I have to crash the computer and re-start it. Sometimes I
get a blue scan screen since it was "not shut down"
properly. Sometimes it starts without this scan.

Please help me!

Try to defrag in Safe Mode. I know this is the only way

I can defrag.

Default defrag problem

You need to get scandisk to work to have any chance with Disk =
Defragmenter.

I suggest that you remove Temporary Internet Files ( including Offline =
Content ) and History. Start Settings, Control Panel, Internet Options, =
General, Temporary Internet Files, Delete Files, check Offline Content =
and click on OK. Also empty your Recycle Bin. This helps remove a =
potential problem when running Scandisk and Disk Defragmenter.

Another precaution. Delete the contents of the applog folder ( the =
content not the folder! ). See link below (disregard the references to =
the error messages ) for the procedure.

Defrag Error Message: ID NoEFRAG00205 (Q238165)
http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;Q238165

I would then run a "thorough" Scandisk again in Safe Mode. For Options =
see that System & Data areas is selected. Then click on Advanced and see =
that you have selected:

1. Display Summary -Always.
2. Log file -Append to Log
3. Check files for -Check all three options.
4. Report Ms-Dos Mode name length errors

There is an option to Automatically fix errors which I would check but =
many computer buffs do not preferring to investigate the error using the =
log before attempting to fix the problem.

When you have successfully run Scandisk run Disk Defragmenter in Safe =
Mode.=20

To start Windows in safe mode Click Start, and then click Shut down. =
Click Restart, click OK, and then press and hold the CTRL key until the =
Microsoft Windows 98 Start-up Menu appears. For some machines, you can =
use F8 instead of CTRL to bring up the Microsoft Windows 98 Start-up =
Menu. Enter the number for Safe mode, and then press ENTER.=20

Notes In safe mode, Windows uses default settings (VGA monitor, no =
network, Microsoft mouse driver, and the minimum device drivers required =
to start Windows). You will not have access to CD-ROM drives, printers, =
or other devices.=20

Disk Defragmenter Hangs After Choosing Disk to Defragment
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;218160

Please let the group know how you get on whether you succeed or not. If =
it fails please give some information about your hard disk, it's size =
and whether it has been partitioned.

Hope this helps.

Default defrag problem

I HAVE FOUND AN ANSWER.

When I was reading all the messages in this newsgroup,
there was one that mentioned "disable virus scan". This
reminded me of the help Canon gave me when I was having
printer problems.
They said 1-Disable virus scan
2-Go into "End Task" (Control, Alt, Delete) and
remove everything except "Explorer and Systray". I did
this and the scandisk worked and then the defrag worked.
(It was so long since I had been able to do this, it took
161/2 hours to defrag).

Also, there is a free 15 day download on
www.execsoft.co.uk I ran this after my Windows defrag
and it found "1338 excess fragments" before it run
and "there was 1 excess fragment."

I hope this helps. I appreciate knowing that I am not the
only one having scan and defrag problems.

Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the feedback.=20

You probably would have got the same result running both programmes in =
safe mode or scandisk in ms-dos. 16.5 hours to defrag is a long time! =
Scandisk will take a long time if it is a large hard disk for the =
Windows 98 era but Disk Defragmenter, if run regularly, should not take =
so long. It would not take so long if you turn off the optimise =
function.=20
