BTW :-

My son also reminded me that mpg's (probably .mp3's) cannot
be changed to .wav (or was/is that the other way around?!)
I do have .wav that he says he can not convert and copy to his

That (.wav to .mp3 and .mp3 to .wav) is possible using the CDex utility I

Default MCI sound driver - PS

Since my last post I have attempted to burn the mg3 files to a CD.
I tried 4 different methods (using 643 of the 650 available space & 300 of
the 650 available space) using: 1: Adaptec\Easy CD Creator 4\CreateCD and
2: Adaptec\DirectCD

All 4 CDs resulted in error: all files (named mp3's) showed in the CD
directory but only about 15% of them were able to be opened or even copied to
the new system.

Using Adaptec\Easy CD Creator 4\CreateCD, the following error message was
given in the "closing session" process (copying files & writing tracks
*appeared* to be successful). Error message received: Recording Phase (99%)
Errors reported by output device. The following errors occurred while
creating CD:
T0100:I/O error (o04/09/00) - CD Recorder error - track following error
T7118: TrackWriter error - Command retry failed

........ the new PC did successfully copy the *15% good* mp3 files and
allowed me to play them.

Using Adaptec\DirectCD, I received no error messages during the "copy to"
process or when I "closed" the CD to be allowed to play on other systems.
....... When I placed that CD in the new PC it stated that the CD was corrupt
and would not allow me to view the files.

I then used Adaptec\Easy CD Creator 4\CreateCD to copy data files (NO
mp3/wav) and used the "Close Session and Leave CD Open" option to see if the
new PC would accept this CD - the new PC read and copied this CD successfully.

I then tried the same type of "Close Session and Leave CD Open" option to
see if the new PC would accept this CD containing mp3's ----- The closing
seesion basically gave me the same error message as previously but added

Reason for receiving this message:

this error message is accompanied by another error message that describes the
cause of the original problem.

mg3 files then stopped with an error message - which I forgot to write down.

My computer is quite loaded with *stuff* !

I will wait for your suggestion but I'm quessing you might tell me to
uninstall the "Adaptec\Easy CD Creator 4\CreateCD and the Adaptec\DirectCD "
and then reinstall it? I do have the original CD containing the software.

disappeared somewhere along the line (most likely the same time the program
started with the mp3/wav difficulties. Before using the Cdex utility should

Connie, just a very quick 'first thoughts' for a long post.

I don't *think* that the problems are necessarily due to you trying to
copy/burn .mp3 files.

A couple of suggestions to try/eliminate first:-

1) Defrag your HDD first - but as you don't have (very) much spare capacity
this might not really help.
2) Try burning at a lower (slowest) speed and/or a different brand of
CD-R's.
3) Use CD-RW's (saves wasting CD-R's g and you can erase and use again)
and burn only small batches until you can clear the space from your HDD
(Defrag again as/when possible)
4) If using CD-RW's, definitely burn at the slowest speed possible!!
5) Try burning with the 'Verify' option enabled (if not already set)

NB . Re- 2) Not all brands of CD's burn as well as others.

Perhaps someone else has got some further thoughts/ideas

Baffled, Connie....but I keep getting the nagging thought and have to
ask.....did you burn the mp3's as *data*. In the same manner as you would

And I will add to some of Mart's good suggestions. See inline....

Excellent idea....try using say 4X instead of 6X (can't remember how fast
Adaptec 4 burns.

I will also add 2 important things that I learned while using Adaptec 4 and
WinME. Use only CD's that have either a silver or blue recording side. I
found that Verbatim were usually very good. Gold surfaces, as in Kodak
Gold, will not record.....or wouldn't for me. Took me a long time to figure
that one out.

And MOST IMPORTANT of all......use CAD to shut down unneeded programs and
disconnect from the Internet just before recording. I have a sneaking
suspicion that programs like Zone Alarm and your AV muck stuff up if they
try to connect to home base, or react to a probe. I ALWAYS did what I just
said.

Other than that, if you could get your hands on a copy of Roxio 6, I think
it might just do the trick. I bought it on eBay for $10 Cdn. and it was
worth $50!! Solved all my problems.

Cheers....Heather

LOL!! 1500 mp3's?? Nah. I still only used half of my 40 gig HD on WinME
with everything. Now that I have 120 gig, I will have "to go some" to fill
it up.

My downloading days are over coz I have 99.9% of what I wanted. And I did
75% of it on dialup. Btw....WinMX bit the dust, due to US Government
interference and threats of a lawsuit. Some of the more enterprising types
involved with it got it going again (can we spell h-a-c-k-e-r-s??) I
couldn't get it to download though. I have eMule on here, but haven't used
it.

XX Figgs...rushing to get ready for Elayne's arrival on Sunday. Why, oh
why, do I leave everything to the last minute?? (VBG)

DUH!! Thank goodness you got up early. I burned all of my mp3's as
*data files* to CD's and transferred them to this XP computer and they

Or he can just play them from the CD drive if he wishes. Easy CD Creator
4 is pretty old, but it should work. No point in getting a new Roxio
version (they bought out Easy CD, SSAP)....but make sure you get either
Nero or Roxio on your new computer.

OK, let's just clarify a little further :-

... I can save/burn other file extensions
(.doc, .jpg, etc.) to CD

Are you SURE that you can't also save the 'original' .wav and .mpg's (as
data files)??

- it is the audio that can't be saved or copied.
Audio at this point is those you mentioned- .wav or .mpg's.

Note that 'Audio' are 'modified' .wav of .mpg (etc.) files which are
'converted' to .cda files by your Burning software to make an 'Audio
CD'.

In the meantime - assuming you can copy (burn) your .wav or .mpg files
to CD (as you can with your .doc, .jpg etc. files - after all they are
only 'data files') then you should be able to transfer all your music
files to your new pc by using CD's.

Note also that you cannot save the actual .cda formatted files to your
hard drive. (You can of course, save the 44 byte 'descriptor' part - but
that' neither use nor ornament g)

If you are trying to 'rip' tracks from Audio CD's to convert to .wav's
etc., (or vice-verca) then you *may* need special software e.g CDex (
http://cd-to-mp3.audiolaunch.com/cd-ripper/ ) but your existing burning

What 'Burning' software are you using e.g. Nero, Adaptec, Roxio, etc.?

Would suggest that you can't PLAY the sounds. The MCI Sound Driver

If your problem is with the burning operation ONLY, then you might
need to
re-install your CD Burning software. However, if the error report
occurs
when trying to PLAY the music, then (as Heather has alluded,
elsewhere) you
may have to re-install your sound card.

Upon digging around this is all I found that referenced
*MCI*: in system properties performance PC Cards:

Is probably a 'red herring' as PCMCIA sockets are only (usually)
installed
on laptops!!

Would it be possible to hook the old tower to new tower

Yes - several options - but first, try to ascertain the 'real'
underlying
problem.

Default MCI sound driver - PS

Heather and Mart:
Well, I have been picking away at moving the mp3's. I select about 90 files
(using CD-RW) of which about 60 are *correct* and can be copied onto the new
PC. Have set defaults to "Verify" and write speed of 2X

The error messages I gave previously are still showing up during the closing
session. I just work backwards up the list until I find the last one that is
workable.

I can accept this way to do it but am now wondering about pertinant (sp)
software programs (Simply Accounting) for example that I want to move to the
new PC and if they contain any sound files that will bugger up the transfer.
I moved one program and have found that the exe file extension was not
included at the end of a file name and consequently I can't get that program
to open. I used the "createCD" utility.

Any comments of why the exe file extension (could be other ext missed also-
I have checked thoroughly yet) didn't get included as part of the transfer
(copy) - it is listed as .exe on the CD I used to move it. Would the virus
(nortons BTW) program have had something to do with this failure to properly
copy?

"Heather" wrote: Baffled, Connie....but I keep getting the nagging thought and have to

Yes (I think so) - used the "dataCD" and drug-in all files the same way

Empty your temp & TIF folder first.....then scandisk and defrag.

Just to double check - when you are speaking off deleting *Temp* files you
are referring to C:\WINDOWS\TEMP , but not the file folder itself ...
correct?
The disk cleanup included the removal of files from the TIF and a few other
folders which I followed with the scandisk and defrag.

I am also using the Verbatim CD-RW (silver on one side, grayish on other)
and shut down everything (unneeded programs, internet etc) using CAD.

I will finish moving the mp3's (and deleting ... all 924 of them!!) from
one music folder before my next cleaning/defrag and then I'll look up Roxio 6

I'm getting dangerously close to information overload

But thanks for all the suggestions - your continued help is appreciated, so
please keep suggesting!

Connie, just a very quick 'first thoughts' for a long post.

I don't *think* that the problems are necessarily due to you trying to
copy/burn .mp3 files.

A couple of suggestions to try/eliminate first:-

1) Defrag your HDD first - but as you don't have (very) much spare
capacity this might not really help.

Empty your temp & TIF folder first.....then scandisk and defrag.

2) Try burning at a lower (slowest) speed and/or a different brand of
CD-R's.

Hi Connie....

Mart is over the pond and I am in Canada, so we operate at different times,
grin.

About the only other thing I could suggest is the uninstall and reinstall of
Adaptec. Plus go to the Roxio website and make sure you have the
updates...I believe there was just one that made it become version 4.05. I
will find the spot, coz it is confusing on that website.

OK....found it, but that is one old program!! I would really suggest you
hit eBay and get at least Roxio 5 or 6. Anything higher will NOT work on
WinME, btw.

There are updates on that page. Check your program under Help/About and see
what your version is.

Well, I have been picking away at moving the mp3's. I select about 90
files
(using CD-RW) of which about 60 are *correct* and can be copied onto the
new
PC. Have set defaults to "Verify" and write speed of 2X

The error messages I gave previously are still showing up during the
closing
session. I just work backwards up the list until I find the last one that
is
workable.

I can accept this way to do it but am now wondering about pertinant (sp)
software programs (Simply Accounting) for example that I want to move to
the
new PC and if they contain any sound files that will bugger up the
transfer.
I moved one program and have found that the exe file extension was not
included at the end of a file name and consequently I can't get that
program
to open. I used the "createCD" utility.

Any comments of why the exe file extension (could be other ext missed
also-
I have checked thoroughly yet) didn't get included as part of the transfer
(copy) - it is listed as .exe on the CD I used to move it. Would the
virus
(nortons BTW) program have had something to do with this failure to
properly
copy?

Yes (I think so) - used the "dataCD" and drug-in all files the same way

Empty your temp & TIF folder first.....then scandisk and defrag.

Just to double check - when you are speaking off deleting *Temp* files you
are referring to C:\WINDOWS\TEMP , but not the file folder itself ...
correct?
The disk cleanup included the removal of files from the TIF and a few
other
folders which I followed with the scandisk and defrag.

I am also using the Verbatim CD-RW (silver on one side, grayish on other)
and shut down everything (unneeded programs, internet etc) using CAD.

I will finish moving the mp3's (and deleting ... all 924 of them!!) from
one music folder before my next cleaning/defrag and then I'll look up
Roxio 6

I'm getting dangerously close to information overload

But thanks for all the suggestions - your continued help is appreciated,
so
please keep suggesting!

Hi Heather & Mart
Well I don't know how this happened but after doing six transfers of approx
90 mp3 files, each having about 60 *usable copies* ....... all of a sudden it
started doing successful CD creations with NO errors. I gradually worked up
to 150 mp3 files per transfer after getting no errors.

The only thing different I done: used the new PC to erase the CD-RW (old PC
was burning so I was trying to save time). BTW - the new PC's CD-RW Erase
referenced Roxio in the process popup window. My computer terms are pathetic
so I hope you get the jest of what I'm saying.

Thankyou for the link to the upgrade site and the other tips. Tomorrow I'll
delete the mp3 files from the old PC - do a clean, scan and defrag then see
about uninstall/restall/updates if the adaptec program goes haywire again -
time will tell. I'll also into your other suggestions, so I'm alittle
prepared.

I realize that the mp3 files take alot of space so our son can now move,
copy, burn rip or delete from the new PC. Thus giving me working space on
the old PC for the programs (which I like to use) that are not XP friendly.
I know its crazy to have two PCs set up ! *Hard to teach an old dog new
tricks* scenerio, but I'll get there eventually.

Heather when you said to "Empty your temp & TIF folder first.....then
scandisk and defrag..... *Temp* files you are referring to C:\WINDOWS\TEMP ,
but not the file folder itself ... correct?

I'll post back with tomorrows results.

BTW - I am from Saskatchewan.

Connie, Heather made several good points in her reply that to make sure
nothing else is running in the background (Ctrl+Alt+Del and close other
programs down) and disconnect from the internet etc., etc, etc.

However, in my experience, "track following errors" and similar have been
caused by 'media' issues - hence my suggestion of changing to a different
brand of CD. Another thought here is that your CD-ROM burner *may* be aging
(How old is it and has it had a lot of use?). It might also benefit from a
lens-cleaning session. A lens cleaner can be bought from your local PC or
Hi-Fi store.

You say that :-

... I select about 90 files (using CD-RW) of which about 60
are *correct* and can be copied onto the new PC.

Have you tried the 30 failures on their own, or in a different batch(es) -
or do those same 30 files ALWAYS fail?

I realise that you were generalising, but you can see the point I'm trying
to make.

Now a little more worrying is your comment :-

software programs (Simply Accounting) for example that I want to move to
the
new PC and if they contain any sound files that will bugger up the
transfer.
I moved one program and have found that the exe file extension was not
included at the end of a file name and consequently I can't get that
program
to open. I used the "createCD" utility.

Firstly - if I understand you correctly - you can't just 'move' a working
(installed) program to another PC. You CAN move (or copy) its data, of
course, but you MUST re-install the program on the 'new' machine to enable
it to function properly.

But again, you mentioned :-

I moved one program and have found that the exe file extension
was not included ..

which appears to confirm my previous assertion that :-

I don't *think* that the problems are necessarily due to
you trying to copy/burn .mp3 files.

Uninstall/Re-install Easy CD? - Well it certainly wouldn't do any harm - and
*may* just fix it g
Aging/dirty CD-ROM burner and/or media incompatibilities are certainly high
on my list of suspects.

Remember, there are other ways of transferring data from your old HDD to
your new XP box, but worry about that if you come completely unstuck with
your CD burning method.

BTW - If you want to find out EVERYTHING you will ever need to know about
CD-Recording issues, try Andy McFadden's site:-

and don't have nightmares g Good luck
