Default Need Dual-booting info: current 98se & add xp

Hi:

I've always used win98se, and I want to keep it. However,
several cutting-edge games require that I move up to XP.
(new ATI catalyst drivers are being made for xp, but development has
stopped on drivers for 98se. Also, xp will see/use more ram than 98se
will.)
Bottom line: I've got to add XP.
I have 4 hard drives on my system. Each is 120-160GB each.
Right now they are all FAT 32, but I can clear one and make it NTFS..

1. Is it best to keep 98se on one drive, and use a completely
different drive for XP?

2. What is the best program to use for dual-booting 98se and XP?

3. Will XP "see" the FAT 32 drives (other than the 1 dedicated to
the 98se). Most of my games and programs are kept on a separate
drive apart from the currect C (which holds 98se.) I would like XP to
be able to access these games and programs without having to make
duplicate copies of them on the xp drive.

4. Finally, if I decide, eventually, to delete 98se, will that cause
problems? (I think most boot programs would sit on the same drive
as 98se.). (or am I wrong?)

I have very mixed feelings about XP, but my biggest problem is
that ATI won't make drivers that support 98 or ME anymore. My 9800
Pro is being held back by older 98se drivers, and that keeps LOMAC and
FS9 from really taking off!!)

Thanks for any help you can give me.

If this is indeed the case that, ATI will not make drivers for 98SE and ME
then I will contact the company to complain as I also use ATI graphics
cards. Do not worry. I am on the case and will appreciate all support
given to me. I also am interested in the dual boot answers from MVP's.
See my weblink for a medium security problem that afflicts the NT source
code and Microsoft has not fixed it yet. Also, low grade problem for XP
that is being fixed. This is why 98SE must remain on systems as a backup if
these problems are found by hackers before Microsoft can fix them.

Well, considering that you have 4 drives... I would just proceed to install
XP on one drive, leaving other intact.

2. What is the best program to use for dual-booting 98se and XP?

You don't need one! Just install XP, it will recognize the Win98SE install.
Select the drive where you want to install XP, choose new installation,
don't
upgrade as it will overwrite the Win98 install. Once installation is done,
Win XP (or 2K or NT for that matter) bring up a screen that lets you
select your OS of choice, it defaults to a default OS if you do not select
one. You can configure this to allow xx seconds before the default OS is
selected and the default OS.

3. Will XP "see" the FAT 32 drives (other than the 1 dedicated to

Win Xp can see FAT32 partitions. No problem there.
But (dang you!), you will need to install whatever s/w you will be using
under XP in XP. Yo cannot have s/w installed under Win98 and have XP
access it. There is an exception.. if your install consists of just manually
copying files, and creating a desktop shortcut, then I retract, XP can
share the same install, but wen was the last time you did that? Today,
most, if not all, software is installed through a setup program. components
are registered, which totally makes it impossible for one OS install to
access
and use s/w installed in another OS install.

4. Finally, if I decide, eventually, to delete 98se, will that cause
problems? (I think most boot programs would sit on the same drive

Of course, it -could- cause problems, but it is just a matter of doing it
correctly. I have never done that, but have no doubt that people here
canhelp you and that there is plenty of info around on doing this sort
of thing. But then again, personally, I would probably keep my Win98
install. It might be an oldie, but it is also a goodie!!!

I would add one more thing to do. After WinXP is installed, format a
floppy from within WinXP and copy these files from C root directory to
the flopp: (Assuming Win98 is installed on C drive.) boot.ini,
bootsect.dos, ntdetect.com, and ntldr. If something goes wrong, this
floppy can be used to boot your WinXP installation.
