Default Compatible driver f. writemaster

I'm having a problem with installing win98.
No compatable driver is on the start diskette for
my DVD/WriteMaster optical drive. I downloaded a
driver from samsung. This one fills more than can be
contained on the disk. Does anyone know how this
problem can be tackled ?.
The 40GB fat32 formated harddisk intended for win98
is mounted as a secand drive on a Vista machine. Any
problem with this too ?.
Thanks.

Get a old PC and put put win98 it on it. you can get one for $25 with 10
gb hard disk
Then Copy to that 40GB fat32 formated hard disk @ Drive D:\
and you can get that old PC to some kid to play with!

A moot point as any machine new enough to have Vista on it
will not have components with any Win98 drivers

best thing to do is simply install Win98 within a virtual machine

Thanks for answering. I suppose it'll do mounting an old
CD/Optical drive. And change back when having win98
installed. Kids demands more PC-power to play with than
most of us older I think.

The motherboard on this Vista is a P5LD2 SE. Which is a rather
old board. No more old than Vista drivers were found on asus
support. Now this is two years ago. But I'm guessing win98
will run fine on the original bundled drivers to this motherboard.
I have an old CD optical drive on another machine. I could make
a temporary exchange. Change back after install of win98 and
upgrade the WriteMaster. Then possibly running into the problem
you're bringing up. I didn't found any information on product
compatibility at www.samsung-odd.com
Perhaps I should select an XP-Home install instead - I have one on
the shelf. I don't remember if this comes with Internet Explorer
lower than 6. I need to test a site in IE lower than IE6.

I tried the latest VertualBox 3.1.2 three days back. When trying to
install win98, the Floppy drive kept spinning wouldn't stop.
Don't know what I did do wrong - if.

Well first off all...Win98 cd's are typically bootable
so you should not need a boot floppy

(Not all win98 cd's are bootable but if you do a Google search
there are some methods to re-create a bootable one)

If the mobo has win98 drivers then win98 should of course work fine

But I still recommend the virtual machine...
(try booting from the cd)

Reason is ...if you install Win98 *after* you already have Vista on the
machine it will trash the boot loader and with Vista it can be a bit
messy to get it fixed again (if it can be fixed at all)

One other thing:

If the mobo is old enough to still have win98 support
I am amazed that Vista will work on it...
I imagine the performance would be terrible.

I think I'd just backup the data
wipe the drive and install XP.

XP comes with IE6

but you can install IE7 or IE8

(though I have found that IE8 does not always work properly with XP)

There are plenty of alternative browsers out there such as
Firefox, Chrome and Opera

If you really want win98

you'd need to install it first (on one partition)
then XP second, on a second partition
