Default Won't load OS

Got into trouble in trying some W98 utilities. Apparently one of them
was a NT type app. In a very reliable W98SE computer, I ran an
executable, the machine then rebooted and now gives a DOS screen:
========
file is missing or corrupted; c:\windows\himem.sys
there is an error in line 1 of config.sys

file is missing or corrupted; emm386.exe
there is an error in line 2 of config.sys

file is missing or corrupted; himem.sys

file is missing or corrupted; dblbuff.sys

file is missing or corrupted; ifshlp.sys

-----

can't find win.com, can't continue loading windows

c:
============

I copied emm386.exe, himem.sys, and ifshlp.sys to a floppy from a
working W98 machine. Was planning to dig out a DOS book and copy the
files to C:windows,

What is the best way to save the existing installation?

I'm skipping the number in front of each line
========
loading device = c:\windows\himem.sys

load failed = c:\windows\himem.sys
loading device = c:\windows\dbluff.sys
load failed = c:\windows\dbluff.sys

load failed = c:\windows\ifshlp.sys

If the numbers are needed, I can post them. BTW, there was no file
dbluff.sys in my other W98SE machine.

At a command prompt C:\, use EDIT to open C:\msdos.sys and post back
here with the contents of the file (excluding the lines of xxxx's). Be
sure to include any lines that exist after the block of xxx's. In
particular look carefully at the lines in the [Paths] section, including
the WinBootDir line.

Have you tried a Registry Restore?
I believe you just boot into DOS (command prompt) and type scanreg
/restore and press Enter.
Then choose a date of the morning it happened or an earlier date.
Otherwise do a Google Search for himem.sys is missing in Win98.
Fairly common problem back in the Win98 days, including the win.com
problem.
Perhaps search on that one.

I had used Cop (plato), a nice backup utility from the old days. That
had restored from a month old registry, no help.

I tried Scanreg, restored from the morning of the problem day. I
assume registry backup occurs at bootup (?), if so, anyway no help.
